ID help request. (And a note for Gumby.)
    #3578888 - 01/04/05 11:50 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey folks,

Despite the distinctive characteristics of this mystery mushroom, I've been unable to locate it in either of my two field guides. If someone could help me narrow it down to a genera (even without pictures), then I could search the internet more effectively.

The mushrooms are 4-5" tall when mature, and were found in central Georgia. They grew in a cluster (I only found the one cluster) at the base of a pine tree, amidst pine straw, in a heavily wooded area.

Cap: Strongly umbonate, dark brown in the center. Fading to a lighter shade of brown around the margins. 1-1.5" in diameter.

Gills: The color of the gills is striking, but I am not adept at describing colors at all. They are a vibrant dark purple-red. The spore print is tan to light brown.

Stem: The stems are a pale yellow and exhibit no bruising. They are rubbery and tough. There is no ring.

I've learned to identify most of the non-active species growing within miles of my home, but these guys have me stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks -

Manannan

P.S. for Gumby: Is there any chance that you could re-post the contact information for the Mycology Club in GA that you spoke of earlier? I would be most grateful.

They sound similar to a group of species near Cortinarius cinnabarinus that are fairly difficult to tell apart.

Happy mushrooming!

That sounds like Cortinarius. There are lots of them and they can be difficult to ID to species. Off hand I can't think of any Corts with reddish purple gills and yellow stems.
