Tough for me, easy for someone out there
    #3577651 - 01/04/05 02:04 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I use Mozilla Firefox. I keep getting this message coming up in a "Messenger Service" dialog box:

Message from WINDOWS to ALERT on 1/3/2005 11:40:04 PM

SECURITY ALERT : Windows has detected 10 Spyware programs installed on your computer!

Spyware causes pop up messages , tracks your online activities and displays advertisements.

Your Anti-Virus and Firewell will not remove Spyware.

Visit: www.antieye.com for free removal information!
.......................

Obviously spam. I went to the site and they're just selling some more dumb spam. They try to make the error look like a real windows dialog box with the blue bar on top and the x in the upper-right hand corner.

How can I get rid of this shit?

Thanks in advance,

Earl
(RL)

How can I make it go away?

Do you have any adware detection/removal programs?

you probably need to disable the messenger service.
run>type"services.msc"
scroll down to messenger service and disable.
reboot.

I also recommend other service modifications

Thanks for the help guys.

I am running Ad-Aware and AVG Free Edition.

biO I will try disabling the messenger service.

I checked that blackviper site and didn't see anything too exciting. I am curious how I can get Service Pack 4 for XP, I have heard #2 is buggy.

Thanks again.

Spybot is another good program to add to your utilities. IME, Ad-Aware can miss things that Spybot will catch, and vice versa. If those programs don't find anything, then check this site out

There is no Service Pack 4 for XP.

you need to look at the service configurations @ blackviper.com and modify your services as listed. I recommend going with the "safe settings."

for SP1: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Archive/servicecfg.htm

for SP2: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

there is no SP4. SP2 works just fine (as "fine" as windows gets). If you p2p, you'll need to modify the TCP connection limitation, however. MS thought it would be a good idea to limit these w/ SP2 as an attempt to reduce p2p efficiency. Use this: http://www.lvllord.de

anyone else running SP2 who p2p, I recommend this patch as well.

Yes.
Thank you all for your exceptional help. The problem seems to be fixed. I will try some of these other modifications.

Thank you again.
