 Psilocybe cubensis "Z-Strain" on Uncle Ben's 5 Minute Rice cased

The other day I made up a few jars and ran out of substrate with one half pint to go. I went to the kitchen and looked for something to experement with sadly all I could find was a box of Uncle Ben's 5 Minute Rice. So I figured what the hell, I'll try it. A while back I read in the forums that minute rice wouldn't work but I tried anyway. Here's what I did....
I grabbed 1 cup of minute rice, tossed it in a bowl and submersed it in water.
I let it soak for 2 hours, It swoll up to about twice it's size, the outside was like steamed rice but the inside was still hard.
I strained and rinsed it and put it in the half pint with a dry verm cap.
I PCed it with my other PF jars and innoced with 2cc of z-strain on dec 10th.
On december 26th the rice was fully colonized, it displayed rizo. growth the entire time. at this point my PF jars were only 50% colonized, So i Birthed it
I prepared my self a container to case in and layed down a base layer of 100% coca coir
I then broke up the cake, it fell apart nicely like grain does
When the entire cake was broken up it created a substrate layer of about 1.75 inches
I then layed down a casing layer of 50/50 verm/coir about 0.75 inches deep, placed some 2 mil vapor barrier over the casing and incubated it, I had to patch once
Finally today (Jan 3) I saw the first pins
I will do daily updates at 11 pm est from this point on so check back..
also on a side note: I can't beleive this worked 
here is my first update (JAN 4) check back tommorrow for more
as you can see that is quite the pin set

thats 106.6grams wet, I didn't weigh the aborts so there's probally another 3 or 4g there trip report coming up either 2night or tommorrow
**TRIP REPORT**
none. there was no trip, my offical tester ate 30g fresh at 8pm, it is now 11.37pm and the highest he got was the giggles for about 5 mins. When he eats my WBS Z-strain he normally takes 2.3 cracker dry and hits a low level 5 even had ego death once of 3g of dried Z-strain, His level of my impressive flush-----LEVEL 1, thats right the potency is about the same as the crappy shrooms that are in circluation round here, in other words, my best flush off any single cake casing yeilded 106.6 of crap, great learning experence though
I decided what to do with this experement, Mr. Katana helped

on the cultivation forum a few months back someone aked if they could use minute rice as they couldnt find brown rice, someone told them that they couldn't do it because of the wrong nutes, I didn't even look at the cake untill the 12th as I didn,t think it would colonize, it was a pleasent suprise to find it slaughtering the PF jars

It's possible that it has the right nutes to fruit, but perhaps the wrong nutes to produce psilobin/psilocin? Make sure to make a comparison of potency between the minute rice and the PF tek

I don't know, I remember reading in one post around here that theres a certain nutrient that was used in the production of psylobin. I could be wrong so don't go jumping all over me, im just a noob.

You are right it often is said that rice as whole grain is more or less useless as a substrate.
I was amazed bout that since the main ingredient of PF tek is brown rice flour.
And hey Im curious how the mushies will look when they are fully grown!

Its said because other whole grains work much better. Pretty sure WBS is at least as cheap as rice too if not cheaper.
Rice will work though, just like any whole grain and will produce psilocybin (it is impossible for it not to)...fruits will just vary in ways such as smaller or larger mushrooms, more or less of them, and more or less flushes.
PF Tek is not meant to be optimal, its meant for people who dont have a PC. If you have a PC and are doing whole grains, there are better substrates then rice. PF Teks, besides giving smaller flushes then most common whole grains, give alot fewer flushes. This should be better (no verm=more nutes) but how will the flushes compare to WBS, millet and rye?

I normally use wbs and recently I've gotten into rye but sometimes I do the old PF tek just for the hell of it, this was just an experement I decided to post, UPDATE ON FIRST POST
also the box I cased in was a cout down 6 pack box lined with black plastic, the cardbpars got all soggy and fell apart, the plastic only got in the way from that point, so I birthed it

Glad you have learned that cardboard=a no-no in your fruiting chamber. Same with wood. Plastics=
By all means experiment...I was just saying why its commonly disreguarded. Z's are nice, excellent pinset there too..

I'm just a little worried about the potency, after the last few replies, after yet another bad trip, I've said no more to the mush but my bro will be testing these out as soon as they are ready, so heres how things will go, i will post pics of final yeild and dosage right after harvest, then the next morning a trip report. Of course the updates will continue untill then

Only negative for potency I heard was corn since it is lacking some B vitamins (if I recall well) which affect potency in a positive way.
THe mushrooms from PF cakes do have more then enough magic in them! :P
Dont know about the 5-minute uncle ben rice though......

okay thats sad to hear but i think maybe you should not give up on that flush he ate approx 2.4 grams if they were dried. which means if he ate only a little while ago it would be a weak weak trip also i thik since you were allready told that they would probably be weaker why not increase the dose ????
2.3 Level 5 thats crazy i've taken 5 grams and barely made low 5 ( i wish i had a low drug tolerance)

Those are beauties. Only thing I'd try to do is not let the spores drop all over like they seem to be on a lot of your caps. I would have picked them before they dropped the spores like that. But they are very nice nonetheless. 5 shrooms to you for the great work.
Sux about potency. Surprises me. It could be a lack of phosphorous in your nutrient base- psilocybin requires phosphorous. Psilocin doesn't require phosphorous, so you could have some psilocin in your shrooms but little or no psilocybin. I'd like to know the chemical makeup of your casing. Interesting in any case.

Next time soak the rice in DUNG TEA... to hydrate it, then mix in a bit of horse poo in the cake. That should make a huge differance in potency.

i got 3 1/2 pints of brown rice (using 50/50coffee tek) like 80%colonized with B+...lookin good after its all done ill have my log up.

mmm what about adding a nutrient?
use the rice as an alt. for verm. and say, cocoa powder as an alt. for brf...?
maybe honey water instead of regular water...
would this make a good experiment?

What's a verm cap?
That looks like a pretty easy way to grow it. Since my mycobag got contaminated and I don't want to drop another $30, I'm looking for a relatively simple alternative to give a shot.

verm cap- dry verm on top of substrate while in jar
and if you do this, use BROWN RICE, not white rice, if you use white you will grow shitty shrooms
