Help me, I'm moving to LA
    #3576593 - 01/03/05 08:18 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Yeah, so I'm most likely moving to LA at the end of the month and I'm not really sure what to do. The place I'm working will probobly be in Hollywood/North Hollywood or Santa Monica. I've only spent maybe a week of my life in southern california and the last time was when I was 10.

To anyone with experience of this insanely huge city, where are the decent places to live, the places to avoid...ah I'm not sure what to ask specifically. I'm moving to a giant city alone, I don't know for sure where I will be working, living, and hardly anything about the area.

I know I'm a little vague, but could somebody at least try and help me and tell me about the place, specifically the Hollywood area?

look for a large philopino/hawaiian dude that wears his hair in two large braides. Then stab him in the throat for me please. You might see him at clubs promoting for rock bands n what not.

My advice... go somewhere besides LA. Any specific reason your headin that way? I personally didn't really like it there. Nothing against anyone out that way, but it definately wasn't my type of town.

Believe me, it is not my choice to go there. It's the last place a person like me would feel comfortable in. I'm pretty slow paced, open, reserved and not particularly well dressed.

Well anyway it is the place to go for my particular field (music business). I want to go back to Seattle but the pickings are pretty slim up there. Hopefully the LA thing will only be short term, less than 3 months for an internship and possibly get a paying job elsewhere. That is the tricky part, I won't be making money in a city where a single apartment costs more than I've EVER earned in a month. I want to sublet or something so I don't have to sign some yearlong lease keeping me shackled to a city I don't like and a life I can't afford.

that's unbelievable.

I hate LA, but I live here and have actually
found it to be a pretty cool place to live if
you can find yourself a nice little niche.

there's a lot of neat little enclaves in LA.

the concert scene BLOWS compared to SF.

Hey Sky.. welcome to the club. I had lived on the east coast all my life... mostly DC/Baltimore. I love the east coast, but I needed a break from the ghettoness/attitude/run-down/drug-violence ridden east coast for a while. DC/Baltimore are big cities, but I've never lived in an area as MASSIVE as LA. It's easy to get lost in the crowd and become anonymous outhere if you don't strive.

I've got sort of a entrepreneurial free spirit.. so I figured I'd hit the LA area myself. The last day of Sept 2003 I moved out to LA here.

I have had a lot of friends from Maryland come out to cali the past few years. To be honest 90% of them moved back east. The average time out here seems to be about 2 full years.

If you're really motivated, LA is a great place. There's lots of people to learn from. It's very competitive so you'll be driven to bust your ass. There's a *LOT* of opportunity if you're focused. Business out here is VERY independent. You have to be a "self starter" (at risk of sounding cliche').

But that's all you'll really find out here. The first month will be fun. Then for about half a year it will get REALLY tough. You'll miss your home quite a bit.

There are so many people I know from MD that moved out here we actually have a sort of club. We call ourselves the "MD Refugees". A lot of us started drinking kinda heavily the first few months when we got out here to get us through the culture shock.

I only knew a couple people out here when I got here. I live with a couple people I knew from Maryland. There was an aqauitances from MD I met up with when I moved out here. We started hanging out down in san diego and clicked really well. But just as we started having fun, he ended up moving back to MD.

The price you pay for such independence is that it's hard to meet new ppl. Ppl are a bit snobbier out here and more reluctant to let new ppl into their cliques. I still don't really know that many ppl.

You should have some fun, though. And you'll probably meet some cool ppl if you're going to live in Santa Monica/Hollywood. That's the heart of the whole LA area pretty much... but trust me... there's always going to be this part of you that is going to want to move back.

It's a great test of character though. I say try it. If you can make it in the cut-throat LA area for a couple years, you can make it anywhere. You work harder, but you play a little harder too. When things get really stressful, there's always lots of beautiful beaches, and mountains to check out. Plus the concerts out here are massive. Check out www.coachella.com

While you are getting your bearings here is a decent place to crash until you get your own digs:

Alta Cienega Hotel
1005 North La Cienega Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA 90069

Rooms go for 60 smackers a night and they have a decent breakfast for free in the AM (hey, it's food in the belly!). If you want to stay in Room 32 (The room Jim Morrison lived in for ~3 years) then it will cost 70 bucks a night. It is really right smack dab where you want to be. The Sunset Strip is right up the road. I give this hotel a thumbs up!!

Barney's Beanery is a decent priced joint for grub and beer and is walking distance from the hotel.
