you can use a fish tank, polycarbonate (lexan) is expensive and acrylics (plexiglass) are more costly than glass in many cases.

a 10 gallon tank cost me about $8 at a super pet store

Buy the cheapest...

Better than that is the bathroom wall board. The plastic stuff you see all over gass-stations bathrooms.

Home-Depot, check over by the light fixtures and desk lamps. You will see a section with carpet and kitchen counter-tops... You are looking for 5-foot X 9-foot white plastic with a slightly bumpy surface on one side. (The name passes me at the time.)

May also be found where they hold thier Wood-Panneling (Not ply-wood and MDF)

Plexi would be a huge mistake IMHO . If you are gonna spend the time and money making this thing do it right , spend the extra bucks on lexan , it will outlast plexi 100 times over .
If you are just trying to make a homeade type of greenhouse , you can just use some 3ml or thicker plastic used as drop clothes or for rock gardens , it sort of depends on do you want black or clear plastic .
Either style can be bought in rolls for aprx 5-8 $ a roll .

You can get lexan at home de pot, lowes ,ace ,etc ... do not freak when you see that it costs more than plexi . Way worth the few extra bucks though , you will not be sorry if you go that route , where as plexi you will be very sorry you went with it , I was !

you'll also want a few strips that can ser as reinforcement, lexan is flexable and
will sag over a 56" span, there are special adhesivs you'll also need to secure
the pieces together

Lexan is more rigid than you are giving it credit for , especially if you go with the thicker material .
Use self tapping screws every 6 inches to hold to main frame of cabinet
5 min epoxy holds to it for an adhesive(scuff with sandpaper) . Clear silicone to seal edges for airtight seal is good idea .
