Lesson learned about air exchange + grow update
    #3573417 - 01/03/05 12:25 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I'm workin on my first grow using popcorn and let me tell you, air exchange is FAR more important than I think a lot of people give it credit for around here. A lot of people don't stress the importance of air exchange for jars in incubation. I had several jars of popcorn incubating with no air exchange and they were barely colonzing. I took the aluminium foil off (there was tyvek under it) and just days later growth has exploded. Definately not leaving the jars covered from now on. Tyvek all the way.

I'll keep you guys updated on my grow with pics along the way. Right now I've got 4 healthy jars out of 6 original. Not bad for a first time using popcorn, I wasn't expecting perfection. I just shook em today, I hope to be ready to spawn them to my bulk within 10 days. I'll update soon.

Um, Aluminum foil is breathable....unless you weld it on there.....or....tighten it really really tight.....

It completely covered the top of the jar and was tucked underneath the metal band. There may have been some air exchange but with all the tyvek exposed, the growth I had before seems insignificant.

Foil is good just don't form it on so "tight". Here we're talking gas exchange not fresh air exchange so when incubating they just need to be able to release the gases (metabolic waste) built up by the metabolic activity that is created by the myc as it digests substrate. Gas exchange is vital in healthy growth as is fresh air exchanges during fruiting. GL

exactly what causes are created during the incubation stage?
if it's just co2, then would it help to turn the jars upsidedown, from time to time?

I flip my jars if they stall. Popcorn usually colonizes in less than 2 weeks for me. I typicaly use 2 layers of tyvek.

There really is no need to flip jars with adequate gas exchange but for whatever reason they do not then flipping the jars will usually help as long as there is adequate gas exchange. There may be more than just CO2 produced at later stages without any gas exchange possibly the formation of methane gas? Either way flipping doesn't hurt anything and can certainly help when the jars have stalled. GL

Thx Hyphae,
I've noticed some folks around here turn there jars upsidedown. I thought that was the reason. nice of you to clear it up

I just want to kind of expand on jonas' question. When i starting growing someone told me to just put masking tape over the holes in the jar and leave it on until the jars are completed colonized. Is that okay or would it be too restrictive for gas exchange? Should I removed the tape? I have 4 jars of EQ and 8 of the OIs and so far the EQ jars are colonizing very very well but there is not even a sign of mycelium growth in the OI jars (7 days since innoc)? Any ideas?

yeah same issues for me on some of my jars..taking the tape of lets fresh air in correct,as long you are in a somewhat clean area for the jars taking the tape off will help out alot..but then you have contam issues

That's my understanding as well. But I feel that it is better to not risk contamination by allowing unfiltered air into the jars. This is why I use tyvek. Just inoculate through the tyvek and cover the hole with a bandaid. Either that or you can make a "sandwich" putting a layer of tyvek on, polyfil on top of that, and another layer of tyvek on top of that. This way you can inoculate straight through all of that and still keep it sterile. The polyfil will catch any contams that will make it through the hole on the top layer of tyvek.

I was just noting the importance of gas exchange (as hyphae corrected me) during incubation. I had none and had very slow growth. I fixed that, and growth exploded. Just my observations, nothing ground-breaking, but important none-the-less.
