Evil employers
    #3570994 - 01/02/05 12:58 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

Has anybody noticed some shady practises by employers?

For example, all of the manufacturing mills in my area intentionally work their employees 70-80 hours a week. I think they do that so that people will quit after a year or so. They want a high turnover rate so that they don't have people sticking around for twenty years or so. Older employees are often paid more and are more likely to demand benefits and concessions from the management, whereas newer employees are likely to keep their mouths shut and just be happy that they are getting a paycheck. When the older employees won't leave, the plant often just gives them a lump sum if they will quit.

Many other jobs also seem to have the same philosophy of encouraging a high turnover rate. I have a friend who has a job at a juvenile facility. Bad girls who get in trouble go there. One week she will be working Mon-Fri in the middle of the night, and the next week she could be working Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun during the middle of the day. Every week is different...the days and times ALWAYS vary. It would be much easier on the employees if they had a set schedule that was always the same. I think the employer is doing this so that people will get annoyed at the fucked up schedule and leave. How messed up is this shit?

lol ive been retrenched 3 times
companies pack it in and they always write off the employees before they ever opened shop...unions are dead
the law protects them too...they can steal a mans wages, owed holiday pay and retrenchment bonuses by just declaring bankruptcy...then they open shop down the road under a different name...dogs!

Don't worry. Plenty of fresh labor coming across the border every day.

Bastards! I used to live near Finch & Pryun Paper mill/. They always went on strike. Their union was a little greedy though.

unions are a corrupt group of employees formed to stop a corrupt group of employers.

Who knows why some places work their employees the way that they do. However companies and businesses that have a high turn-over rate also pay higher taxes when it comes to their Payroll. I believe it is called the "Experiance Ratio" if my memory serves me right.

never heard of that pertaining to payroll taxes, but there is an experience modifier on workers Comp insurance(a BIG part of a LEGIT business)

most of these situations described, long hours/odd schedule, are usually known by the potential employee BEFORE they get the job. Turnover sucks, slows productivity and leads to more accidents.

Most large companies have restructured their benefit programs and really have no need to drive off new hires...its the 20-30 year employees that have a 'grandfathered' in pension that most companies would try to replace with new, non-pensioned, cheaper employees.

not all employers are evil....there are a lot of evil employees out there also, looking for lawsuits, workers comp claims, etc, in order to "screw the MAN". When in the long run all it does is increase costs for employers therefore making them hunt for a cheaper source of labor.

my work was like that, till i became a section manager and said, you save more money with having skilled workers. Rather than training new idiots all the time. The actually listened, and the place has been great. They gave us a little extra time each week so you dont have to work so hard, but often with that extra time we get extra work done anyway!

Happy workers are good workers, less sick time too.
