I spotted this HUGE mushroom at Prism 2005 (Cape Town) in the pear orchard. The head was as big as my open hand.

Any ideas?

Evan's in the right direction. We need a spore print color to really get started.

At first glance it looks like a Lepiota (Chlorophyllum is a genus split from Lepiota). There are other possibilities, and a spore print color would settle things pretty well.

Lepiota includes species that are choice edibles and deadly poisonous. Accurate identification to species is essential before eating any of them.

Happy mushrooming!

Hi, not sure where exactly you are in Africa were but C. molybdites has been identified already from Nigeria so it is safe to assume it is in your part of the continent. There are also edible and toxic Lepiotas in Africa. Here is a reference by some doctors where the mushroom was identified as a hallucinogenic mushroom. Of course this is impossible since it is toxic but not neurotropic.

here is a reference.

Adewusi, S. R. A., Alofe, Fn., Odeyemi, O., Afolabi, O. A., and O. L. Oke. 1993. Studies on some edible mushrooms from Nigeria: I. Nutritional, teratogenic and toxic considerations. Plant Foods for Human Nutrition vol. 43:115-121.
The biological value of 5 mushrooms Chlorophyllum molybditis, Psathyrella atroumbonata, Termitomyces robustus, Termitomyces striatus and Volvariella esculenta from a collection of wild mushrooms were determined using weaning rats. The authors also discuss the possibility that in Nigeria, Africa, a known toxic species, Chlorophyllum molybditis is allegedly psychoactive. It's local name in Yoruba implies `a jegba'ariwo-orun' (eat and hear voices), and according to the authors of this paper this implies that it may be hallucinogenic. We (Jochen Gartz and I), believe that this mushroom has been mis-identified.

p.s. Here is a larger Lepiota from the Fabulous Rice Paddies of Ban Lipa Yai from 1989 or so.

and laid down next to my foot to show the size. My shoes are size 9.

Amanita and Lepiota are closely related to each other, so it's not too surprising that they are similar in appearance. The easiest difference to note for most of them is that the scales on Lepiota caps are part of the cap flesh, but on Amanitas they are merely warts that can easily be rubbed off (sort of like they're just glued on).

Amanitas also are in a symbiotic mychorizial relationship with birch and pine. Are there those trees in Cape Town?

There was a lot of pine trees less than 10 metres away.

to take a spore print:
1.) have ready both a sheet of white paper and a sheet of black paper.

2.) cut the cap of the mushroom free from the stipe [stem]

3.) place the cap, gill side down, on a piece of paper use black paper for best results, especialy if you suspect a light spore color) and place a cup, bowl, etc over the top of it all so that the air inside is still.

4.) leave this to sit for several hours to overnight.

5.) check the color [this is the color of the spores in deposite]. if the deposite is not heavy enough for you to be sure of the exact color, you are finished. if not, check to see that the cap is not everly dry and repeat from step 4.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
