Children exposed to drugs

Children exposed to drugs
By KELVIN HEALEY
26dec04

PARENTS are taking infants and young children to drug-fuelled rave parties.

Several outdoor rave festivals in Victoria allow patrons to bring small children.
Anti-drug and family groups have accused parents who expose their children to the party drug scene of acting irresponsibly.

Dozens of youngsters attended the recent Earthcore Carnival near Shepparton, mingling and dancing in crowds in which marijuana was openly smoked and some revellers were under the influence of mind-altering drugs.

Potentially lethal party drugs including GBH, LSD and Ecstasy were consumed at the event, ambulance staff and revellers told the Sunday Herald Sun.

Earthcore is one of several rave festivals that encourage families to attend. And the Australia Day long weekend Rainbow Serpent Festival at Beaufort offers free entry to children under 12 and even boasts a children's area.

Activities for youngsters at last January's event included children's meditation and animal totem blessings.

Australian Drug Foundation chief executive Bill Stronach warned of the dangers of exposing children to the rave scene.

"It is very much an adult activity and having kids in that environment means, potentially, there are duty-of-care issues for parents," he said. "We know kids are impressionable and they tune into what's going on . . . they may well be exposed and see some pretty unusual behaviour."

Australian Family Association spokesman Bill Muehlenberg said taking children to raves was bad parenting.

"It is certainly bad news all around . . . it is not something any parent who is doing a decent job of parenting would expose their kids to," Mr Muehlenberg said.

But parents and party goers at Earthcore defended the presence of children and said the environment was healthy.

Gabby Berry, who attended with her partner Ben Hickey, and children Eia, 2, and Yani, 10 months, said the youngsters loved the event.

"There are interesting people to look at -- why wouldn't they love it?" she said.

"I can't go to clubs because I am a mother of two, (here) I don't need a babysitter."

Yes just do what the suburbanites do, and let Nanie Gonzalez raise the little tikes while you attend your coctail parties, and charaty dinners.

Yeah, hehe, ever heard of a children's entertainer who didn't engage in unusual behaviour?

These people need to shut the fuck up about what they know nothing of.

I have seen countless children at fests and events and they looked to be having the grandest of times. I believe this is good for them. Alot better than going to say, a public school.
Of course you will have exceptions based on the parents but that is always going to exist.

Exactly. These kids can learn straight from the horses mouth what drug use is like, and how responsible users can use it safely. Instead of sitting through ridiculous drivel like "oh no don't smoke pot you might cook some food and fall asleep and burn your house down oh no!!!". My guess is these kids will grow up to be responsible adults that use drugs responsibly if it is their choice.
These people really are in no place trying to tell people how to raise their kids. I've seen family settings and homes that are FAR worse than an occasional rave or festival setting for young ones.

Actually there was a lot of young kids at roo the years i went. I thought this was a little bad. Leave the kids at home or dont come if you gotta bring them along. It was kinda odd at points seeing people doin coke 10 ft from thier kid.

I'd like to see the son of a bitch who wrote that to show me one instance of death due to LSD.

Lying bastards like that should lose their balls.

People can get themselves killed on LSD. That's how they're able to add that.

I think it's stupid to bring kids to raves though. Leave them with your mom or something for Christ's sake.

...and people can get themselves killed walking down the sidewalk, but I don't see us demonizing sidewalks. Lets be real and recognize that the author was simply re-spouting government anti-drug propaganda.

In certain environments it is safe and even beneficial to raise children if you are responsible about it. To shield our children from certain aspects of our lives is no better than those fucking idiots who always freak out from watching the News too much and lock their kids up night and day. This is fucking retarded, and doesn't even work, because kids today find out about everything eventually, at a generally rapid pace. So fuck that. I say let's be straight-up with kids and teach them about the world in the manner you think is the most positive and beneficial to their overall development, not what will "protect" them in a the short-run, shielding them with ignorance.

I think its fine when the parents act responsible, but i have seen kids getting lost at festivals etc, because their parents are to fucked up or busy doing drugs to take care of their child. This is where its not acceptable to bring children to the environment. If they take care of them and don't act foolish its fine.

I have seen kids getting lost at the mall, etc, because their parents are too busy shopping to take care of their children. Bad parenting has little to do with illegal drugs.

i am a regular visitor of outdoor goa parties where sometimes just a lil bunch
but sometimes several hundred people gather to join in dance.

among them there always are several families with babies or little kids
and what can i tell you, they are having the prolly best time in their live there,
being surrounded by nice open minded hippies, running around on the grass
without cars without pollution and simply having a great time.

i cannot see what shall be the incredible risk for them,
noone would ever even think about doing something aggressive against
someone else on a goa and the children always seemed to enjoy themselves a lot,
so, well, i think that news piece is just stupid.
peace ohm :mushroom2:

I go to a lot of psytrance events and I've seen a lot of this.
I don't like it one bit. Just as you don't bring your freakin midgets to the nightclub, you do not bring them to a rave. Simple as that.
