Good old US..?
    #3570168 - 01/02/05 07:19 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

After nearly a week had passed the Yanks finally decided to assist the Asian nations that were torn apart..
Nearly a week, now c'mon.. I'll bet if there was oil in any one of those nations they would be sending ALOT more..

(Note, this isn't meant to rub up any Americans in the wrong way, only the jokes that make the decisions)

Just my .02
Peace, Birdos.

I've been following this pretty closely and I'd like to know why you say it took "nearly a week" for the US to start assisting. The US was throwing money at the problem from the start. Each day that amount increases.

How do you define "assisting"?

As for oil, Indonesia is a significant producer among the Pacific rim nations. Crude oil accounts for 25% of Indonesia's export revenues. They pumped over a million barrels per day in 2003 and have proven reserves of 4.7 billion barrels. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/FI04Ae05.html

The US imports a very small amount of crude from Indonesia -- 40,000 barrels a day in 2001. This amounts to 0.2 per cent of the US's daily oil consumption.

The U.S. immediately gave 15 million. This figure was merely the first amount that was appropriated for the tragedy. It was pretty obvious that there would be further money and support given. Also, the enormity of the tragedy was not yet known.

As of now, the U.S. has an aircraft carrier there, is giving money, and is flying in food. What are you complaining about?

Not to mention all the grassroots relief that's going on all across the country.. christ on a stick we've got something going on here even, and how many of your local churches have some kind of program set up as well? I'd bet it's damn near all of them.

If it did take a week it's not suprising at all. Last time I checked how many ppl here on shroomery.org did NOT want to donate atleast 1 dollar to the disaster, 33% did not want to. So it's not surprising at all. I really don't think they took a week, but it's not surprising.

You can criticize the US for a lot of things (and believe me, I have) but I don't think that the response to this tragedy is one of them. Today marks a week since it happened and the US government has committed $350 million so far, to say nothing of donations by private individuals.

These poor bastards get whats washed ashore. Lets face it, the world has been reduced to a room full of thugs. You get what you can get. Later on when its all gone we will be the best of brothers in the quest to make earth the best in the universe. Oh how I love you auslanders. If you knew how damm broke the usa is you would suspect foul play. You are fools in a room of thugs.

Go to Amazon.com and click on their one-click pay link.

Last time I checked (just now) they had $12.6 million from 156277 payments. That's an average contribution of over $80. And that is only contributions on Amazon's site and to the American Red Cross.

Whether for altruistic reasons or not Americans' willingness to help in a catastrophe is amazing.

The earthquake that predicated the tsunami was so forceful that it shook the earth forward in her rotation three microseconds. You think we wouldn't have heard about that if it happened in Africa? Do you remember hearing about the genocide in Africa? Didn't we feed Africa numerous times before, even at the cost of US troops?
