Minimum Casing Layer Depth?
    #3568518 - 01/01/05 04:29 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I'm a total newbie who has 3 pf cakes producing mushrooms already. I also have another cake I am going to try and case and a fifth cake which colonized later than the three fruiting cakes. My question is--can I use only one 500ml cake for a casing layer or should I use two and if so, can I take my yet unfruiting cake from the fruiting chamber and crumble it as well?

it depends on the size of the casing most people say 1.5-2 inches in depth you can go thinner but you will yeild mini shrooms... look here... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post3527437

You could only use one cake, but you wont get much results from it.

You can use your unfruiting cake. It hasnt started pinning yet?

Minimum substrate depth .75-1 inch. 1.5-2 will get you much better results instead of just small shrooms.

i agree, except i don't go under 2 inches now.

how long has that cake that hasn't pinned been in there? do you see knotting?

a guy threw one into a casing that hadn't pinned yet and realized after his first flush that it had started knotting and the mushrooms had actually grown inside the casing... not cool.
