WBS Trouble
    #3566692 - 12/31/04 10:54 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I decided to move to wbs after long success with brf cakes and casings. The reason was because 1/2 pints take a long time to prepare. The wbs was prepared and colonized correctly after about 12 - 16 days. The jars were then placed into casings cased with 50/50 peat moss and verm and incubated for about 3-4 more days depending on the casing. Now they are in the terrariums...one ultrasonic humidified tub, and two pmps. These are the same ones that housed all of the BRF cakes/casings and it worked great. These wbs casings have been in the fruiting chambers for about 2-3 weeks now and are pinning, but not really producing anything. Out of 7 casings, there have only been about six, 1 to 2 inch mushrooms. They just aren't fruiting like the BRF ones did in the past.

What can I do with these WBS casings to get them to pin and fruit! Finally, I've been cold shocking newer casings before they go into the fruiting chamber in hopes it will help pinning. Any advice to get some shrooms off these casings?

thanks

I'm not being lazy really. It's hard to improve on Hyphae's advice.

Did you TEST the PH of the casing material & adjust it? If it is way out of whack - that is your problemo.

thats a good idea i haven't begun to work on ph level..kinda hard to find limestone oystershells.. i have already made my casings up..sititng in my ghetto as fruiting chamber but i like it..have a casing that has even growth all around i even put a fine mist on top of the casing before puting into the chamber..so im at day one trying to fruit in a chamber..i was doing a baggy over a small flower platic circle type holder, but i wasn't to sure if that would pan out.

it truely doe seem simple doing casings but then with lack of exp,it truely seems almost impssible to know what to expect. almost willing to go with cakes for simple reasons..well no real reason im posting but to aknowledge the challenges in making casings..

Peat moss=pH adjustment! Test and adjust accordingly...where is it mushrooms like again?

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I have one quick question. Since the winter started it's been quite a bit colder in my house for the past 3 weeks at least. My room has dropped down to 63 degrees F at night. Could these mid 60's temperatures be slowing or hindering the little growth that is there?

The cooler the longer. You can grow with temps a little below 60?F according to PF.

Do you just sprinkle a buffer over the casings, or do you have to actually mix it in when making new casings? Just trying to see me options and try to salvage these things.

thanks

like all grains, wbs is not really a fruiting substrate. what i mean by this is that if you colonise wbs ans thendump it in a tub, case it and wait, you won't be very impressed.

the main reason for moving to grains is to get a pourable inoculum to inoculate bulk substrates, like straw. you're ready - go for it!

Fine. That was exactly my next step. Guess I should bite the bullet and try to find room for a bale of straw around here someplace. Mmm. It's a big yellow rustic coffee table. Isn't it artistic?

Maybe I try straw as an in between station, cause the compost is my goal.
But I heard straw does not give very good multiple flushes?
