It looks to me like you may have a mixed collection. The small size and the wavy cap margins look a lot more like cyans to me than azures.

That's just my opinion though.

i had the same idea. the potency of all specimens seems to rule out P. cyanofibrilosa and the morphology of the ones you noticed seems to match P. cyanescens. these where all found in beach sand dunes growing directly from the leaflet sheath/root interface at ground level, with mycelium descending into the root structure and ascending to the leaf blades of last year's foliage.

i'm a bit stumped about that myself.

You found these near salt water? I assume this because of the grass, I dont know anywhere elese there would be grass like that.

yes.

these are found in ascociation with dune grasses along beaches in northern oregon and aside from the morphology it matches the habbit affinities of P. azurescens [39, 41, 51 and 53 seem to match for P. azurescens all the way around. i'll have to look at some of the other pics aswell.]

some trametes on a log:

and these omipresent Phallus sp. :

i think they key out to P. impudicus in Aroura's keys.

a beautiful panaeolus:

some Amanita muscaria [these looked to be A. muscaria var muscaria, as opposed to ther var. flavivolvata i found in humboldt last year]:

two Lactarius delicioa:

here's a [bad] photo showing a nice instant bruising reaction on P. azurescens:

here are some more dune shots:

looking inland:

and left and right:

and here we have that beautiful northern oregon coastline:

this one has sea-lions in it:

andfinaly, for the animal/animal meat lover in you, here's a cute li'l guy:

Yeah, you're very skilled with the camera. Nice and clear.
I love that one of the ocean and the rocks.
Thats odd that azurescens would grow on decomposing dune grass.
No wood? And sand of all things...

that's actualy one of the typical habitats for P. azurescens. they are suspected of sharing a mycorhizial relationshipe with the dune grasses.

btw: thanx, i was worried the pictures wouldn't come out well, as it's a digital and it was raining the whole time i was taking them.

Weird. Most stuff I've read says they are a wood-loving species.
Is dune grass the only species of grass they typically grow in?
Or can I be on the lookout in regular grass clumps in fields?

Oh yah, the photos were perfect. Two thumbs

they grow in association with many species of dune grass and i've seen them growing in what looked to be crabgrass.

they do grow on wood, or more correctly, lignin containing organic matter. grasses contain lignin aswell, and so they are able to metabolize it.

you can find them in aluvial grasslands some short distance up the columbia river from what i've heard. they tend to grow near the beaches though. those caostal towns with the heavily mulched garden beds in thier shopping centers are a good bet aswell. i actualy placed colonized wood fragments under shrubs in a few plazas while i was there.

Wow, I understand azurescens completely now. Even some stuff about grass. Thanks for helping me along my path of life in mushrooming.
You have filled in some potholes and built a few bridges in my ever-expanding knowlege.

I've been seeing alot of little random piles of alder chips on the side of I-5. Im guessing they are trying to do what you just mentioned

those piles are there for mulching of the trees being planted on the highway. i have seen people looking for P. cyanescens in them many times. i would imagine if you found a fruiting in one of those, there would be a lot of fruits, but it would also be a very visible place to try to harvest some.

Yeah, from what I've been hearing about parks and public areas, I'm sure that in the fall the place is packed with shroomers from all around. Surprised the cops havent caught-on to the lil society we have going on here.
