cakes and casings 2 in 1?
    #3564112 - 12/31/04 04:01 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

greetings fellow growers!

i wondered recently about this...what if...:)

you take a rubbermaid that would suitable for holding casings, and has an airtight top cover. make your casing just if u would do when u have colonized substrate, but your substrate is not. sterilize it in a pc, and innoculte.

so when its ready? you will have a complete casing, and u skipped the additional casing risk? doest his make any sense?

keep cool:) milan

What are you talking about, making a giant bin of substrate material instead of jars?

In that case: IF you are successful, all you'll have is a gigantic cake of colonized substrate that will have to be cased anyhow, otherwise you're just wasting massive surface area of this so called huge cake.

i've done huge cakes, hands down casings are the way to go, big cakes are wasteful

u dont see what i am talking about...it wouldnt be only substarete inside..
vermiculite layer on the bottom, than a little peat moss, the the substrate, peat moss, vermiculite again, so iww will be just like any other casing..

Now I see what you're saying. Looks like a big, risky corner cutting idea to me.

you would definatly have a problem with contams, just look into grain, its fast and gets large yeilds

Why would it be a contam problem? An airtight container is an airtight container. And I believe he's refering to grain, that would be the suitable substrate here.

As people new to the growing scene you should hold back from immediatly commenting and discouraging ideas and instead wait and watch and you just might learn something.

Read that post and it will answer all of your questions calavera.

how could he innoc without opening the lid?
Unless he has a glovebox?

surley you will agree that opening the lid in a normal room is a sure invite for contams, I should have been more descriptive in my last post, If he has a way around an open-air-innoc is sounds like something to try

Are you dense?

"immediatly commenting and discouraging ideas"
Is this what you did? Did you discourage your own idea saying it would contam? I was speaking to THE NEW PEOPLE WHO WERE DISCOURAGING AN IDEA. Now hopefully you get it.

I assume you also didnt read the damn link either which IS EXCATLY WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT DOING.

Tell me I dont know what your talking about. Guess I should have saved my effort to help someone who would be more excepting.

Dont worry I won't "control your toughts"

Read the link to the thread I posted...Magash explains how he did it..the lids are just plastic, you know how to put holes in a metal lid of a jar but can't figure out how to put ome in a plastic lid? Tyvek can be affixed over the holes or polyfil.

i did read the link, It expained everything. plus I thought he meant large rubbermades (The only thing I use after yeilding my mini-shrooms), I realized this was wrong when I read his post over again and he said he was going to put them in the pc, this actually seems like something to try after reading your link
