WBS w/o PC
    #3563024 - 12/30/04 10:50 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I have been getting mixed results with my reading. I really need to know if it is possible to sterilize my wbs without having a pc! I'm on a low budget that has run out recently and I can't afford it. Couldn't I just use the boil-in-jar tek, let it cool and repeat (if need be)?  In addition to the simmer wouldn't that do the do? Any advice from someone w/experience would be fantastic! Thanx.

If I was in your shoes and boiling was my only option, I'd consider a substrate like BRF instead of WBS< mainly because it has been proven to be somewhat reliable when boiled. No experience here with just boiling things, but I'd think that it would be quite risky to attempt WBS that way.

Got the fixings for BRF?

I've heard of boiling for 30mintues every day for 40 days, but most of the endospores in Wbs can withstand temps over 400-600F, and they lay dormat...untill you try to get them to germinate(soak), then they can withstand up to temps of 212, but, you have to have that temp. up for a long time, i.e, 212F for about 1h and 30 mintues...so a Pc is pretty much a must. There's a small chance that it might work....but trust me, it's a Very small chance, it'd suck to waste substrate (wbs), so you may want to jus hold off until you can get one...or jus go pf....hope this helps.later and gl

EDIT: 4 days, big time typo, heh,,sry about that.....

people have had luck with fractional sterilization and microwave sterilization,
they are a little hit & miss for most people, a PC is the only guaranteed way
to kill whats gonna screw ya.

The PF Tek is a much better way to go, from there, read up on pasturization
and poo spawn.

40 days? That a typo man? LOL, Fractional sterilization can be looked up in the FAQ's and requires I think 3 or 4 boils but doesnt work as well as a PC (which can be had for 20-30 bucks on ebay for a nice sized one)..

i did it, w.o pc

soak for 24 hours, simmer for 30, drain REALLY well, pack up ur jars, boil for 30, let cool 24 hours, boil for another 30, let cool 24 hours and then boil 60, and innoc when it cools.

this works beacuse we're killing the spores after they germinate, which can be done at 212*, we're boiling more than once to hatch the endospores

i've done this with some success when my old pc broke

soak, simmer and fill jars as normal then place the jars in the incubator for 5 days, take them out and boil for 1h 30m then allow to cool and innoc as normal, the incubator provides an ideal envyroment for endospores to germ, then the boil can kill them, when i did this i got a 2 out of 12 contam rate, not bad with no pc, and no repeated boiling, this was on WBS by the way

Thanx for the tips! By the way, I've been using BRF and I am not satisfied with my flushes or the size of my shrooms. I am needing to go bulk so I am needing to get a PC eventually. I was just hoping for some tips around it until then.  BRF casings are a waste of time, hell cakes do just as well! :mushroom2:

yea you def. need a PC but if you boil a couple times im sure you'll get some success, just dont put all your eggs in one basket when you do it. good luck

you may discover that there are quite a few that wont germinate until after they reach the 'killing' temperatures...

Oven bag tek could reach the required temps for the required amount of time. Would this also kill my nutes? What is the big difference with the pressure? Sorry, I might sound a little hard headed, just looking for some solid answers. Everyones input is greatly appreciated!

Pressure keeps the water inside your jars from boiling out. If you put them in a 260? oven, you will have sterile dry jars.

Take it one step further... After you soak for the first 24 hours, before you boil, throw it in a blender and get it WELL chopped. Then use it like it is BRF.

Don't forget the Oven-Bag idea... Preheat oven to 300-350... and throw a loosely tied oven bag filled with your mix in there for the hour that you would have done in a PC... (You can always add water after to make up for what you lost in the bake.)

Remember, it is not the pressure in a PC that kills the spores, it is the pressure in the PC that allows the water to get to 220F-250F needed for killing. Normal water boils away at 210F...

OK. Today I took my soaked seeds drained, rinsed well (until water was clean),simmered 30mins, rinsed as before, sprayed 4oz 1/2boiled spring water 1/2 H2O2(3%), drained 40 mins, divided amount of seeds into 1/2's, oven bagged 1/2 @ 425F-25 mins, then jar boiled all for 90mins.
I'll keep ya posted w/colonization & contams!
Thanx to all for the input!

OK....update. Out of 12 jars I lost 3 to wet mold. Those 3 jars were also inoculated with a honey tek instead of spores. So far I have lost all of the jars (WBS, RYE & BRF), that I used this honey tek on, by wet mold. Every one of the other jars of WBS fully colonized without contaminants. I used 2 of the remaining WBS jars to G2G with 12 more jars preped the same way.
