removing possible security holes

I have a quick question for those in the know. It seems like whenever I start up windows there are a bunch of icons in my system tray that I do not want, such as RealPlayer. also, when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the close program dialog box to come up there are even more things running that I do not want there. Sometimes my firewall even picks up on them trying to access the web. Now, I can just click end task and end the program but I have to do that every single time I load windows. Is there some way I can edit this "startup list" so I only have the ones show up that I want? And I have already removed just about everything from the startup folder. It doesn't work (I am using Win98) I once found a program on the internet that could supposedly do this but it cost money and I lost the link long ago. Thanks

To disbale relaplayer go to view->preferences->general->start center and disable it. Some other programs can be disabled by removing them from the Programs->startup directory on the start menu. For others you may have to edit the registry, dont know where in 98 though. You can download x-setup from www.xteq.com to do this for you.
