Slimy plastic doesn't sound very good. I was going to put some alcohol in to the water in my TiT to kill bacteria and such, but I read somewhere that H202 is better....well i put in probably about half a big bottle in there...there's probably about a gallon or 2 between the walls....but i was jus curious if i was on the right track or if i should use something else...all help is appreciated..thankx

Alcohol kills everything, H2o2 is better as far as I know use 1 part 3% h2o2 and 9 parts water. That makes 10% of the total H2O2.

Well i really hate the whole measuring crap...i just threw in a bunch,lol, well, my main Q is, how will i kno if it's working? The fish heater is kind of slimy to the touch but you cant see anything floating around w/ the naked Eye....i'd use alcohol but i don't want to waste it...it evaporates..and plus...i used a shitload of h202, so id hate to add alcohol and waste all of that h202./....unless adding alcohol would help more than hurt...suggestion? comments?

I don't think it matters at all what you put in the water for your TiT. your jars do not come in contact with the water by any means, and although the water may produce a small amount of slime, it is not a breeding grounds for harmful bacteria/spores. Don't add anything to your water it is totally and completely pointless and wasteful. No need to complicate something that is so simple. Just drain your TiT every couple months and give it a good wash with soapy water to eliminate slime buildup (although I very highly doubt that the slime would be harmful to your operation.) After washing, you could take a spray bottle and give it a mist with either a 10% bleach solution or wipe down with a cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Good luck! :rastamon:

I kinda did like you, Gnostic, just poured some H2O2 into my water.  eyeballed it :eyeball:  If you get any kind of colored and/or smelly slimy crap in your bottom tub, then i think you need to clean it out very well and refill :smile:  I bleached my tub before hand and lysoled it too, just to try to prevent any weird things floating around or growing in my bottom tub.  but then again, i'm anal about cleanliness.  maybe what distortion said is ok?

In between grows I spray 70% alcohol and let evaporate.Almost 9 months running.Same perlite,no problems.

When in need of water,just add with h2o2,no measuring.

In floating water..slime wont go away adding h202. H202 wont kill or sterilize much of anything...it will kill spores and thats about it, good for PREVENTATIVE use, but not for cleaning. In the TnT you can put some bleach (not much)..alcohol in the water wont do much good though, it will be to diluted and evaporate quickly. If theres slime though its just about time to clean. TNT's need to be empitied and cleaned every 2-6 months or so..bleach in the water when you fill it and from there add a little bleach every now and then and clean it when its time.

For a PmP, h202 in the perilite will help prevent stuff from growing and if I use a PMP I add straight 3% h202 instead of adding water to the geolite. Water and h202 is used the first time its filled.

Again: alcohol IS KILLING. Maybe you can try some lower ratio, throw in a budweiser or two. Dont forget to share the results with us! :lol:

You can "hate" measuring but it aint that hard to do it by the eye. When I make a H2O2 solution I "measure with the eye".
When you start using alcohol you must be much more carefull and measuring...

Well it's not really that much of a big deal tho, measuring is over-rated,like those humidity devices that show you humidity, it's jus guesstimating, but they are good to use for Guidelines and alcohol evaporates to quickly, bleach sounds like a good Stinky idea =), thankx everyone, i hope that this helps someone else as it did for me =)

If your talking about a tub in tub with the aquarium heater in the bottom tub then a cap or two of clorox works wonders as it never comes in contact with your jars or casings. Don't know about adding to perlite probably not a good idea. I put 2 cap folls in my tub in tub and same water is in there for 5 months now.

Yea, 62 Qt. TiT, Ok 2 cups is far to much, i'm not trying to be a dick but please don't go around telling people 2 cups....That's breaks down to about 1 1/4 of a cup Per gallon (my TiT's amount of water is about 2-1.7 gallons of water inbetween each tub) It's 2/3rds of a cup to every gallon to kill everything and still be safe in terms of putting out chemicals in the air from the bleach, i'll put like 1/2 a cup or so (guesstimation is the key :wink: , well thanks for your imput every one =0, thankx

bleach bleach bleach..common sense which im sure on here is kinda hard to find given..lol... but yes bleach is the main thin gi think of when it comes to keeping water sterile

Bleach definatly has vapors you dont want to breathe! Definatly use caution when adding it and watch your concentration...to low is better then to high...if something does grow in there chances are it wont affect much in your grow as long as its just slimey and not green or some such..if you see colors then your seeing spores...that never happened to me though...just gets slimey which never hurt anything. To much bleach could make you hurtin though...I'd be measuing bleach with capfulls...not cups.

I dont measure h202, water, bleach, whatever..just eyeball it and be safe.

And no, ONLY h202 should be added to perlite in a PMP, not bleach or alcohol.

Instead of using all those aggressive liquids in the water one could boil the water before using and just adding a little h2o2.

In my TIT I used to add some H2O2 but now I dont anymore, in the PMP there is some H2O2 added. But it doesnt stay effective that long with the airstones etc.

I think its better to put more effort in being sterile during transfers & inoc then carrying bleach around in your tits and pmp. The smell alone ......... yuk.. :frown:

True, but even the cleanest water gets dusk and such in it over a short amount of time, and yea, eyeballing is the w2g, i have another Q but it deserves its own thread, it'd be great if u guys cked it out as well, thankx 4 the replies

i wasn't guessing. no offense you must have a very senstive nose.  a cup an  1/2 of bleach mixed in a gallon of water is not going smell that bad.unless you had your head right in the tub. i'm sure you'll be choking from across the room from the toxic fumes. :wink:

you seem to know all about bleach. is it not keeping the slimies out of your tub?

Throw some fish in there, they will eat the algie!

Use clear plastic containers... you can disguise it as a fish tank, with mycelium growing in sunken bottles!
