Cactus containers
    #3562284 - 12/30/04 07:11 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I was wondering if there is a qualitative difference between using plastic and clay/terracotta pots when potting cactii.

The reason I ask is because I had a San Pedro in a plastic pot and when I transplanted it to a larger pot with better quality mix, I noticed that the soil was gluggy and seemingly not very conducive to root growth. I have a few clay pots lying around the house, here is a picture of them. Are they suitable for San Pedro's? It's about 5" deep and 12-15" in diameter, I'm just concerned it isn't deep enough. Anyway let me know what you think.

Thanks!

And here is my Pedro, in his old container.

i find that clay dries out quicker. i use clay for cacti and plastic for everything else, personally. doesnt really mater what you use, just keep the moisture in mind.

I would recommend a smaller more evenly dimensional plastic pot. Australia gets very hot in summer and terracotta heats up and dries out very fast, if you forgot just once to water when necessary you could easily cook the roots.

I hear unglazed pots help to remove the moisture from the soil quicker. Better for cactus and n00bs like me, and you. Get your self some 6inch wide unglazed pots, Im sure bunnings will have em, and get your self some gravel un/coloured as a latop layer.

I'll go take a photo of my 2 new pots I got, it really does seem the soil has dried quicker, since I had a soaking problem not so long ago.

I saw your vermiculite bag and thought I know where you've been shopping. hehe btw same cactus mix i use amgrow

The problem is, I've had to increase the pot size since the rootball was large but shallow. I'll just leave it in the current plastic one until it outgrows it.

But for future reference, what did you mean by smaller, more evenly dimensioned plastic one?

OK JaRRn. I won't bother buying any gravel though, I'll just find a driveway and wash them.

I meant a container with relatively even height and width. Trichocereus have a shallow root system but I wouldn't put them in too shallow a pot like the terracotta one in your picture. I would reserve that pot for a large globular cactus with shallow roots and the need for fast drying.

I'll do that. I was thinking it would be a good pot for rooting when I'm unsure of the tip.

JaRRn, those look good. What are they? Pedro?

It's funny you should mention SAB, I was just looking through their list of Trichs wondering which ones to get. I also only just recently put an order through for L. williamsii and Sceletium emarcidum, though I'm getting tortuosum too.

Like you said as long as the moisture is controlled clay is fine, it's more of a heat issue. From what I've read and seen they prefer their roots cool, which is why they do better planted in beds.

Well it can get pretty hot around here so I guess I'll just put them in a position that receives a period of shade throughout the day.

Thanks for all the responses guys, you've been a real help.
