2 and a half year old spore syringe

Hi all,
We (roommate and i) are anxious to start 2005 with a new project and were wondering if a 2 and 1/2 year old spore syringe still would do the trick or is it a waste of time? The syringes were stored in the dark at room temperature.
Thx in advance,

humm... if they do work then the growth will be considerably slower than with fresh spores, thats if they do work at all, my advice is wait for a few more responses

I don't know about slower, I used a syringe that was a year old before and it didn't colonize any slower than ones that I bought from the shroomery vendors. Maybe that's just me though...

if thats the case the only problem should be wreather or not the spores are still viable, I know a print will last forever but will a syringe?? I say go for it, what the hell??? it's worth a shot

They should work fine. Probably have little clumps of mycelium already in the syringe.
I wouldn't let that stop me from maybe getting something New that has come out since your mini retirement.

clumps of myc. are the best, then you don't have to wait around for a week for germination to take place

lol, without clumps germ starts at 2 or 3 days here after inoc with a viable syringe:p
1 clump and all your spores are at one place, no good.

damn I'm always waiting around 1 to 2 weeks before I see anything...unless there are already clumps in the syringe. I definitely gotta look into that karo tek.

Thx for the replies.
There are no clumps in em.
Ill surely have a look in to the new more 'exotic' strains available then just these Ecuador Any tips?
Peace,

there are so many strains out there it's all a matter of personal preference. some are fast colonizers, some are slow, some produce huge shrooms, others produce small. My favorite is the cubensis blue meanies strain. They look cool and I got 4 nice flushes from a casing. Good luck.

In this case it's better that they don't have clumps of myc. After that long it would be dead. Spores will last forever, but myc won't.
I'd say go for it, if you've kept them clean, their age really shouldn't be a problem.

Your Ecuadors are a favorite strain among many...give them a shot. Strains will grow similarly ad youll need to try some out and find your favorites but since you have eq..start there..you may find its all you need. Tanatalus is correct about the absense of myc being a good thing at this point..

Mycelium does survive storage in sterile water for long periods of time.
Spores germinate in water, and the resulting mycelium does stay alive for at least 4 years. Probably alot longer then that, but I'll go with what I have Experience with versus what I estimate.

Best wishes for 2005!

They still work....
We have some mycelium growing in 3 of the 4 jars with rye, sadly we had to get rid of 2 of the best colonized ones because of blue contams..(after six days).
We used our school lab with a flowhood setup for inocculating and a stove set at 25 celcius for colonizing. Could these blues be some kind of endospore contam? The rye was pressurecooked for about 1 hour at max setting, but we did not keep the rye in water before setting up the cooker. Do u think thats the mistake we made...?
We'll try again next week with the remaining spore solution.
Peace,

How long should u pre-soak the rye to germinate these endospores? Should 24 hours be sufficient?
Thx,
