Using plants to eliminate Co2?
    #3561704 - 12/30/04 04:14 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I was wondering if anybody has thought about using plants in the terrarium to eliminate, or at least aid in the elimination of carbon dioxide..? Obviously, most, if not all plants aren't too crazy about 95% humidity, but I still wonder. Maybe ferns would work?

Maybe have shrooms in one terrarium and plants in another.Circulate the air so often.Just a thought.

Hey mush...lol, No...I can't believe that you asked that :wtf:
Plant>co2=o2
And yes, many have, only problem i've heard of is contams, thats typically when you try to cultivate them indoors and right there w/ the mushrooms.

I have however seen them grow in pots/beds with plastic over them (humidity), they usually dont have the plant inside w/ the mushrooms tho, always ends up contaming, i forget the scientifical reason, but they can be grown next to plants in the same soil, just not in the same "Atmosphere", it'd be like trying to mix water n oil, Gl,heh
Well, gl, later

Plants do both, agnostic, do some research.. ;P

They make oxygen and glucose from Co2 and water. Fotosynthesic reaction.
But also reversed. Breathing process. Producing Co2 and H2O.

Foto.S. :  6 CO2 + 6 H2O --> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
Breath. P:  C6H12O6 + 6 O2 --> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O

Blah, there you go  :ass: :  I dont think adding plants will lower your Co2 level.

Keep it simple and add an airpump. :thumbup:

De-ja-vou...

Search the forums for my post... search for "grass" and "co2".

I have not tried anything yet with this... except growing mushrooms in my terrarium... but not the reverse, yet. I wanted to put a terrarium in with my mushrooms! The mushrooms in my terrarium are fine.

The major contamination that you might get is bacteria that helps plants digest food. Anarobic, and anabolic??? They help break down amonia nitrate/nitrite, and add nitrogen to soils.

Still your avatar makes me feel that I am very straight, but those girls express homosexuality?
Is it that what atracts me? :laugh:

Ahs, I think (can google it) that plants produce the co2 they "eat". Keeping it balanced. If they were big co2-eaters then we would not have that co2 greenhouse effect?

Anyway, its 31-12-2004 here now. You take care and have a very nice and wise new years eve! :thumbup:

Just to off-set the "Green-house CO2 statement..."

Plants are on the ground, and they absorb almost all the CO2 within hours after sunrise. (PPM goes from about 700 to 100)

The upper atmosphere has 1100 - 2200 concentrations... (Once was 800 - 1200 a hundred years ago... before automobiles, and deforrestation.)

Only in the root-zone. Also plants and mushrooms have different needs neither really conducive to each other, sure shrooms give off co2 and plants love it and the temps are not a factor and they both love light but there is always certain microbiological symbolic relationships that are separate between the two. It would certainly be a great project :thumbup:

something i know from growing pot in the past: plants expel CO2 from their roots. It is nowhere near equal to what they ingest though. When growing a plant hydroponically in a deep water culture you must feed its roots air from an airstone to keep CO2 from building up. Also, most plants won't do very well in low-light, high humidity environments. It is logistically easier to just fan the terrarium.

Great project but with very uncertain outcome... :grin: Plants keep co2 stabile in a closed circuit, external co2 added to that circuit cannot always be consumed. Hence the greenhouse effect.
