Uses for Pressure Cooker
    #3560771 - 12/30/04 11:13 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

This isn't really a cultivation question but I'm sure some of you guys have had the same problem. My old PC broke down and I mentioned to my family that I needed one and they gave me one for christmas. The problem is now they're going to be asking what I've used it for and I don't think they believe I'm canning things. I'm trying to come up with a believable use for my pc and I'm having trouble thinking of one. At christmas one of my uncles asked me and in a stoned stupor I shrugged my shoulders and said canning. I got some weird looks from that answer.

What the hell do you cook with a pc? In my house if it ain't deep-fried or microwaved it must be take-out. Thanks for your help guys.

GH

I only made it to the part of the instruction manual that said how much pressure it got up to. I'll dig deeper. Thanks for your suggestions.

hehehe

you've got NO CHANCE explaining a pressure cooker if they know you're not a cook  ... you could say 'for sterilising things in' and then raise your eyebrows knowingly. say you have a new baby and need to sterilise its rattle, or that you're creating anthrax for doomsday or something i suppose

dude, you dug yourself a hole. i'm guessing that "i'm growing oyster mushrooms" will cause hilarious uproar or total suspicion? is sterility needed in any other hobbies? isn't there an agar step in orchid growing or something? try googling 'pressure cooker' and trolling the pages looking for something bizarre.

good luck

for you vegans out there it's a great way to cook up seitan. That's how I explained mine. But that was only believable because I'm the jerk that makes like 10 pounds of the stuff at once...

If they press you, just say you're lazy and when you do cook you like to do it all at once and fast as hell. Besides, I don't know your family, but most people don't know that cultivating mushrooms requires a pressure cooker. Don't sweat it. And if somebody does make the connection, it's probably a good time to start growing oysters anyway.

GSmith - They have no clue what I'm using it for I'm just trying to cover my ass when they ask (next time).

Thanks for the link Anno  although I've got to say it does make me feel pretty damn lazy (and rightfully so) that you took the trouble to create the link to save me the trouble of typing it in google myself.

Arp - I'm afraid if I tell them it's for distilling liquor they'll want me to share.  :faded:

Ribs! They'll believe ribs. Hell I think I'll cook some ribs in it and give them to some of my family. That'll take care of that. Thanks Tahoe!

It just cooks stuff at a higher temp then it can boil at. Stuff like stews and ribs will be much more juicy and have the flavors you put on them absorbed in. You can explain your getting into cooking and found this whole cooking at a higher temp thing out and wanted to try it out. Look through them recipes too..you can make some good stuff with a PC.

For a nice rib sauce try just garlic, salt and some liquid smoke. Great slow cooked in the oven for 2 hours then another 15-30 with BBQ sauce on. Can also be PCed and/or grilled but thats some NICE flavor MmmmMMmm

The shroomery is a good resource for SO much more info then just shrooms..and even drug in general...take a look through the other bazillion forums...including a culinary one..

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/Gourmet

Its nice how experts found homes to their respective info as well...there are many more people who never venture to this forum but can tell you lots of info on whereever they post. Love this place..

That unfortunatly is not my field of expertise. The few I know like the ribs I learned from my father who graduated from the CIA (that culinary institute of america, not the government agency  ). Its simple but oh so good, which is my kind of cooking. Another simple recipe (and healthy too)...boneless skinless chicken breast in a ziplock bag..about two teaspoons of chopped garlic (like the already chopped stuff or you can press your own), about 2 teaspoons of liquid smoke and a whole bottle of italian dressing and let marinade for 5 days flipping everyday to make sure you marinade all of it. It can be left in for up to 2 weeks marinading (the italian dressing pickles it) but I wouldnt suggest that long and you have to make sure the breasts are fully submerged..then throw on the grill and cook for about 15 minutes. Oh so good

Damn my mouth's watering. I'm gonna start some chicken marinating and try that BBQ this weekend. The shroomery is the shit. And huge kudos to you Scatman. You need a cape, a utility belt and a sidekick. Although I don't think the Scat signal would go over as well as the Bat signal. Can't you imagine a bright light with the outline of poo in the center.

Look, it's a bird, it's a plane, nope it's crap.

Tell them you are a druggie, and you are using it to grow shrooms... Then reply stupidly... What do YOU think it is for?

Seriously, get some fire-belly toads... (They are slightly poisonus... more like slightly toxic.) Then tell them that you are using it to sterilize the frogs tank decorations... That will also stop them from asking to borrow it! (If not frogs... get a pet millipede, I have two... tell them it is for the same thing.)

If that doesn't work, tell them it was to impress some girl, or that you got it for some stupid trick you saw "Mr. Wizard" do when you were a kid.

Break down and actually throw some food in there... If you "F" it up, just add it to your mushroom substrate mix... LOL

LOL, I've wondered where the ideas for some of these substrates came from.

I used to have fire belly toads, they're really cool to look at but they taste terrible (j/k).

I'll avoid telling them it's to sterilize anything. I think I've got my ass covered if they ask me what I'm using the pc for now but I like the idea of telling them it's for shrooms but they'd probably believe me. Hell, maybe I'll tell them it's for making crack, then they'll never know it's for shrooms, right?

I have found that most people (unless ex-hippies) in my family have no idea people grow shrooms or what a shroom is. Hell i never even thought about it until i came across this site. If you have kids or football buddies they love boiled/steamed peanuts while watching the game etc etc..
