Metroid Mushroom... (I.D.)
    #3559317 - 12/29/04 10:03 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I went on a hunt today in San Francisco. I think I've come to terms with the fact that 'actives' are just not happin'n in my neighborhood. So I says to myself, "I'm not comming home empty handed" and so I plucked this funny looking mushroom, which, for some reason, reminds me of the NES classic 'Metroid'. Anyone care to id?

Sorry about the low res. I'm borrowing a crappy digital camera. THANKS! lol.

P.S. Oh yeah, don't worry, I'm NOT planning on eating it.

Yes helvella or gyromitra which is a False Morel, these 2 species are poisonous and should not be cooked, eaten, or otherwise bothered with. It looks cool though.

Good. Now instead of eating a mushroom that is not yours. Eat the ones in the super market. Thanks. -droz

I think DH has it. That looks like Helvella lacunosa, a common mushroom in Northern California this time of year.

David Arora lists it as edible but not very good, but Nancy Weber (the authority on these and related mushrooms) says that none of them should be eaten except for the True Morels (Morchella).

Happy mushrooming!
