When casing with strait verm should u steralize it first?My verm has been in my basment for some time now.If I should steralize how should this be done?thanks to all who reply...

Put in a pot with boiling water, let soak for 15 minutes, drain, let cool, apply.

Read the so far so great thread.. I used plain unsteralized verm and got damn good results

I haven't had a problem with unsterilized verm...it's not a source of nutrition as long as you don't, say, use the same utensils for your BRF as your verm when you scoop verm from the package when you mix your jars. Also, make sure to evacuate the air from your vermiculite bag when you are finished with it to further decrease the odds..

I have always used it straight out of the bag and never had problems with contamination with my stuff. I didn't know that it was supposed to be sterilized. At least I haven't had any problems yet anyway.

If your vermiculite has been in your basement for some time, there's a good chance there's contaminant spores in there. The dark, damp environment in a basement is ideal for contaminants to get in. I haven't had any problems with vermiculite either, but don't take any chances. Sterilize before you case it.
