posibility of a bird flu pandemic rising out of the aftermath of the se asia tidal wave
    #3557988 - 12/29/04 05:59 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

i think that this should be mentioned.
for aobut a year now hundreds of thousands if not millions of animals and birds have been killed in an effort to stop the spread of the HN51 (i think that was the name) virus.
there is a greater thrreat though.
it is possible for a pig or other animal to contract the hn51 virus as well as a human flu virus and for these viri to exchange chromosones and so on leading to the feared HN51A virus (someone please correct me on the names of these)
the HN51A virus if uncontrolled would bring about a massive flu pandemic with millions of people dying around the world. currently there is no cure or vaccine for it.

with a lack of fresh drinking water, and a lack of food, with over 60,000 allready reported dead and hundreds of thousands of miles of land in a disasterous condition, with dead anmals and people strewn about it is about a perfect breeding ground for bactera and the NH51A virus.

the fact of the matter is that this is a serious issue, and im wondering why none of the media has picked up on this possibility, especially with the way that the media gets great ratings from scare tactics, does anyone else have info on this that they would like to share?

also if you look back at the last flu pandemics there has been one every 30 years give or take, it has been 40 since the lsat time the earth expierences one, its about time for anotherone...

Time to thin the herds. The weak die, the strong survive to continue the species. Its the natural order of life on this planet. We humans tend to forget this fact occasionally. We get so caught up in ourselves we forget that we are an integral part of this ecosystem, and we are bound to its laws.

The flu outbreak of 1918-1919 killed something like 40 million people (a large portion of the population at the time). It could happen again anytime.

Maybe I'll die. If so, I was too weak to deserve another chance....

GENEVA, Switzerland -- The United Nations warned Wednesday that respiratory and waterborne diseases could break out in areas affected by southern Asia's tsunami disaster "in the next few days."

Relief organizations are distributing medical supplies to prevent the outbreak of disease, but their main focus is dealing with the wounded, said Jamie McGoldrick, an emergency relief coordinator of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva. (Relief workers describe threats)

"Diseases will start to come through in the next few days," McGoldrick said. "No doubt people will be affected, kids are drinking stagnant water."

Governments in 11 nations are still trying to determine how many were killed in the devastation wreaked by Sunday's quake and the tsunamis it caused. The death toll now stands at more than 80,000 and is expected to rise. (Latest news)

It is still impossible to visit some isolated islands off the northern coast of Sumatra and assessments can only be made from the air, McGoldrick said.

"Populations we haven't reached yet may suffer from disease," he said.

With relief officials warning of possible cholera epidemics and malaria, Dr. David Nabarro, head of crisis operations for the World Health Organization, has warned "we could have as many dying from communicable diseases as from the tsunami."

Nabarro said the main threat to life now is communicable diseases associated with a lack of clean water and sanitation.

"The initial terror associated with the tsunamis and the earthquake itself may be dwarfed by the longer term suffering of the affected communities," he warned.

Hospitals and health services already are overwhelmed and may not be able to cope with people who fall ill with disease, Nabarro said.

Worst-hit have been Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and the Maldives.

But Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Somalia, Tanzania, Seychelles and Kenya have also reported deaths from the tsunamis that sped across the Indian Ocean Sunday morning.

The United Nations has sent disaster assessment teams to the affected countries and relief organizations are distributing supplies.

The global body is also starting to put together an appeal for international aid.
