Damn!! Stinky jars!
    #355782 - 07/16/01 11:56 AM (23 years, 2 months ago)

I have a terrarium (2inch perelite, tight lid, large aquarium) with 3 cakes in it. I opened one of my latest pftek jas and put it in the terrarium. Then I open the second of my latest batch and notice right away it smells like bad wet stinky feet. I thought GEEZ! That can't be right! So I had my sister and friends smell it. They said it smelt like strong shrooms, so I birthed it and put it in the terrarium too. It was 100% white, so I thought it was strange but seemed ok. The next jar smelt the same - strong, bad feet but I stuck it in anyhow.

Three days later there was a change - My terrarium always was fresh and humid smelling, and all of a sudden it was stinking up the house! Yikes!! The next day I looked closely at the stinky cakes and they had dark green bread moldish stuff growing on them! I took them out right away and removed all the perelite for about 3inches around the cakes.

Moral of the story - Follow your nose!! If they smell funky, toss em before this happens to you!

My terrerium smells fresh again, and there is no sign of spreading. Are my other cakes that grew with the contaminated ones safe? Should I throw out all my cakes/perelite and start again? What is recommeded to use to clean the aquarium prior to birthing?

I took the contaminated cakes and cut them up outside under a bush. I hope perhaps the mycellium will win the battle and perhaps fruit in the wild. Are the fruit safe to eat?

Thanks everyone!

Sour smells usually mean bacteria has invaded, sorry...

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do
Nowhere to go
I wanna be sedated
