puppy-chow/polimer casing?
    #3557640 - 12/29/04 04:30 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Hello my fellow cultivators and enthusiests.
I currently have 2 (very different) casings fruiting now and most of my "babies" are dwarfed. I've had 3 that were about normal, but oddly enough they seem to be the freaks! One of the casings has BRF cakes crumbled over 1in. layer of perlite and a 1in. layer of compost substrate over them (fully colonized, of coarse) w/a 1in. perlite casing. It pinned great on the first flush but they were all dwarfs when the veil broke. Potency seemed normal, but I need more weight. Watering patterns remained normal (usually twice daily) and frequent air exchange (up to 10 times a day). Should I try puppy-chow water?

are you saying that you are using substrate as a casing?

The strain is B+. Isn't that supposed to be a fairly large shroom? The casing is about 20in. by 14in. w/ dome lid. Sorry, my pics won't upload!

No, never add nutes after colonized..they get there nutes in the water.

First off, perilite is a very very poor casing material. Thats by far your biggest problem Even straight verm which is pretty shitty is better then that but I'd suggest a 70/30 coir/verm mix. Hell I'd bet top soil is better then perilite.

You should have spawned more compost...at least 2 inches..you substrate layer is to thin and BRF doesnt provide so many nutes. If your doing small casings, forget the bulk and just do whole grains..otherwise use a bigger container and go with the compost for more shrooms.

Whats your humidity like in the chamber? What are you using for humidity? The perilite should be in the bottom of the chamber creating humidity in the air, not in, or under the casing.

No, actually the compost is just additional substrate. The perlite is the casing.

I know what it is...I'm saying the compost isnt ENOUGH additional substrate and perlite makes a SHITTY casing soil.

What I meant about adding nutes after colonized is the puppy chow to water when you mist them....misting with anything or adding any nutes after cased and fruiting is a bad idea.

Edit: I just relized your comment about the perlite being the casing wasnt to me.

I've had a very hard time finding casing materials here. No verm, only perlite (rarely), and coir fiber.
All together the substrate is about 2.5in. and my humidity stays at approx. 95.

Substrate layer doesnt count the perlite on top or bottom so with 1 inch of compost you have 1.5 of BRF? You have more of the shittier nute then the compost...you should have 10% BRF so for 1 inch of BRF, 9 inches of compost mixed in. Compost is called BULK for a reason.

I order verm online, much cheaper. bghydro.com has 1cu foot bags for cheap, which is equal to 30 quarts of verm. They sell a bale of coir that goes with in nicly to make 70 liters... Either way, making the casing like 80-100% coir and the rest (if any) perlite would help..Perlite acts the oppisite of verm though.

And just because the ambiant humidity is 95 doesnt mean the casing is that moist or that the perlite is giving any of that to the substrate...

...so, what do you suggest I do w/ my current casings?
Also, what are some more casings that are adequate and commonly available?

Peat moss may work but usually includes verm and requires a pH adjustment..straight peat may require quite a bit too.

What to do with your current casings? Hmmm damned if I know. I'd probably try and remove the top perlite and recase with coir verm...or just leave it.

You could try making up a big thing of compost and spawning the whole casing(s) to a few larger compost ones...the little perilite in the substrate wont hurt anything and if its only been a flush or two you could probably get away with it without it contaming (which theres more of a risk of the older your spawn is). This will be more work. Other then that you could just leave them and try and get what you can and start over this time...and ask before substituting things.

Theres also a whole section in the FAQs on casing that might help you out. Section in the archieves as well...

Edit: Yeah I just relized the comment about the perilite being the casing and compost the substrate wasnt to me

Thanx 4 the info! I'm going to start a new "bulk substrate" tonight.
