Too few mushrooms
    #3557166 - 12/29/04 12:04 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Well my cakes have been in the terrarium for well over 3 weeks now, and I have about 8 mushrooms on 5 cakes, which are about an inch long at most. I did not dunk and roll, I want to wait untill after the first flush. Is this why I am only seeing a few mushrooms? Will I see drastic results if I dunk and roll after the first flush? On one of my cakes 2 mushrooms were growing underneath it, so I flipped the cake over and now the 1 mushroom is an abort and the other is growing horizontally across the cake. Still looks normal. When I dunk and roll, should the cakes be cleared of any aborts or pins before I dunk them? Thanks

Not enough water. ALWAYS dunk and roll and ALWAYS keep cakes as moist as you possibly can without saturating them. No pins or aborts on the cakes during dunks. Always keep humidity 95-99% as well.

Be sure you have enough fresh air as well.

Just because the air is 98% doesnt mean the cakes surface are...if you do not mist then the cakes will still be drying out. Misting is NEEDED if you dont have an ultrasonic or somesort, with cakes especially..

Fanning is good but you need to make sure at the same time you mist if its needed...if they're already soaked, dont mist everytime you fan but mist as often as they need to keep them as wet as possible without any standing water. The dunk and roll will help you have to mist less since the verm will help hold in humidity in the cake longer..

I only mist the walls of the terrarium , but should I be misting the cakes to the point where there moist, yet no standing water?

Yes but you need to do so lightly and go easy on the h202, especially when pins are present. You should be misting over the cakes and letting VERY fine water drops fall on them until they are moist but no standing water.

I went ahead and gently misted my cakes, and now there is very very small drops of water, about the size of a needle point on the surface. Is that okay?

Yep...the drops should not get ANY bigger though and if those drops are on the cakes when you go in and fan then you dont need to mist..otherwise mist a little the same to try and keep it at that level. If you plan on doing more growing I would suggest a pump up sprayer like this green one for ULTRA fine and controlled mist..
