Lights Immediately After Casing?
    #3556200 - 12/29/04 08:03 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

If someone used the 50/50+ casing on some colonized rye, how soon after casing should you apply light? I'd thought you might want to let the mycelium reestablish its self before putting the lights on it.

I have not done a casing yet, but this is just what I've read:

Quoted from The Mushroom Cultivator by Stamets and Chilton

"Post Casing/Prepinning

Relative Humidity:  90+%
Substrate Temperature:  84-86F
*Duration of Case Run:  5-10 days (but I think I've heard from others 3-5 days)*
C02: 5000-10,000 ppm
Fresh Air Exchanges:  0 per hour
*Light:  Incubation in total darkness*"

Someone corrrect me if I'm wrong, please!  :crazy2:

Correct, a few days at incubation temps with foil covering is what you need to set up a good casing layer.

Be sure to poke a few holes in the foil layer also.

Um....lol....

-Case

-Cold shock for 12-24

-Incubate for 1-3 days

-Check to see where the myc. isnt breaking through...If there's a lot of places breaking through, then you're good..That means you'll have a nice even pinset. If there's a lot of places w/o myc. then you need to Lighly path up where you see myc. and then

-Incubate for 1-3 days and if all of it is pretty much covered in myc. then you're good to go...Most people have a nice amount of myc. growing typically after patching and if you want to patch again then you can but I wouldn't patch anymore after that.

-Then Place into fruiting conditions which someone above kindly listed

Later.....and good luck

p.s, if anyone noticed that i missed something lemme kno., thankx, later

Don't you want to incubate BEFORE you cold shock?

Cold shocking a freshly made casing seems pointless.

Yes..you should not cold shock until even later then that...if you do cold shock (not needed if you iniate pinning correctly and at the right time). If you are going to you should case, incubate for 2-4 days until patches come up, patch well and fruit and then in 1-2 days later when its comming up even, it would go into the fridge for 12-24 hours..then back into the fruiting chamber again. It should not get any light, a temp drop, or fresh air until the casing layer has colonized to the point you want it to. If you cold shock to early you tell the myc to stop growing..then you wont get much growth in the casing layer.
