How plants/fungus attract and deter animals
    #3555356 - 12/29/04 01:51 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Such things as cannabis, mushrooms attract animals.

Animals who have dosed these drugs will seek out to find this plant/fungus again. Because they find euphoria.

Such things as datura, caapi vine deter animals.

Its all psychological. These will be feared by animal. They will fear it after because of dysphoric effects. Humans as an animal will say that it is evil or has some demon inside it because they fear it. Basically they will nearly always put mythological belief on the drug, be it good or bad association.

on that note, it is jsut as likely for the effects of cannibis and shrooms to deter an animal. as can the effects of dmt and daturas bring em back. its an individual thing more than an animal thing. but certainly certain species of animals are attracted to and scared away from certain plants, our specie is no different.

i have always wondered if partial, or maybe even fully, parasitic organisms (i know thats sort of an oxy moron, hope you understand what i mean) are atracted to a "euphoric" effect the host has on them. food for thought.

nope, we dont NEED the plant.....which is why i was saying a partial parasite is sorta an oxymoron....im sure there is a partial word for the creatures im talking about. things that sometimes live off another host, but dont need to 100%.

also animals eating things like fruits are not parasitic as tehy spread the seeds. many plants need animals for survival.

Well, we actually do need plants. How else will we get food? If plants die out, the entire food chain would just collapse and the animals we feed on would die, and thus no more food = we die too. We need plants, many plants do not need animals.

i meant in a parasitic definition type sense.  but i guess i could split hairs and say we could make do with fungus :smirk:  but ya we need plants, but not as a host...and we as animals do give back, we spread em.

neuro, I'd like to hear you explain that. Perhaps you mean phytoplankton in the sea but even single cell organisms can be either plant or animal.

Plants, and some animals, produce compounds to deter predators. Psilocybin and thc might be euphoriants to us but could have a different effect on an animal. Even if it had the same effect, it would be a deterant because in nature animals have to always be alert for danger. They don't have the luxury of laying back and spending a few hours enjoying the trip. The next sound they would hear might be a crunch of jaws snapping on them. Any sort of disorientation would likely be fatal to a plant eater. Other things that plants do to keep from being eaten is to produce disagreeable odors and tastes as well as poisons. On the positive side, plants produce colors, odors and tastes to attract pollenators and seed dispersors.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

I found that alot of the food and fruit I grow attracts more animals than fungus and cannabis .

Most horticulture and plant sci courses and books are hessitant to lay down a hard and fast rule about plant alkaloids, poisons, chemicals, drugs, smells, etc.. attracting or determing animals, insects and humans because there really is no hard and fast rule. More like a "if it's this plant, then the reason is possibly that, but we're not entirely sure."
