AGAR alternative... (Coffee Gelatin)
    #3551917 - 12/28/04 10:21 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I found this neat stuff called "Plymouth Rock - Coffee Gelatin", all natural... blah, blah...

Distributed by "Adit Corp." Contents: Sugar, Gelatin, Coffee.

2 Cups, (1 packet)
Sugars = 76g
Protein = 8g
Caffeen = ?g

Would this be good as an AGAR replacement? Seems to already have filtered/sterilized/granulated food, plus caffeen.

I was wondering if this would possibly aid in faster mycelium growth... faster than normal gelatin. (Which smells like hoarse ass when you add it to boiling water!)

It is hard to pick out contamination from that...
Even harder to tell what is growing!

Funny, the box looks like it was designed back in the 50's-60's...
I can't find out any info on the company, only that this is used by almost every chef. ARG!

I found kiero, but it has vanilla in it... and the honey that I found was $10.00 a bottle! I think I am going to try an get this to work, since agar isn't on any of the store shelves around here.

In the last few days, someone reported using the stuff with vanilla. He said it worked fine.

I am at my witts end... something has to work!

Between TRYING to get contamination in one culture, and trying to NOT get it in another...

I say give the coffee stuff a try, seems very promising, especially after reading the coffee thread in advanced cultivation. Check it out: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2283143/an/0/page/0

Most karo has Vanilla in it, I can assure you I've used bottles of it in cultures just fine.

As far as the alt...looks pretty good...I'm not sure how well coffee will work with agar but I know there have been successes with coffee in substrates and using regular gelitin and another gelitin alternative (cant remember the name but its the vegan alternative) as a replacment to agar agar. Seems like the a good thing to try out though.
