i think the "can you take it?' line is very important. i think religions like hiniduism that speak of enlightenment are really a clever way of disguising the truth about enlightenment and turning it into a religion. most people cannot take the truth because it is goes against the culteral framework through which they are so used to percieving. to them it sounds incredibly pessimistic and depressing because it undermines nearly all of their beliefs. i think someone here has the quote in their sig "no one wants to know the ultimate truth". maharshi would adapt his teachings to questioners who met what he said with skepticism. for example if the questioner was someone who had unwavering belief in God, then he would refer to the Self as God. i think maybe this is where the confusion arises and this is the confusion U.G wished to eliminate. the religion and practise are not what's important what it's important is the truth which they are concealing. U.G saw religions as obstacles to the truth rather than paths to it. that's why it said that hindus agreed with what he said but did not aprove of the way he was saying it.

I agree with giving up the search

I haven't read that much by him, but he sounds truthful, whatever that means
