Helping people get through a bad trip
    #3550760 - 12/28/04 12:00 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

hey guys, tomorrow i will be taking some mushrooms with some friends of mine. one of them who is a great friend of mine, who is prettywell experienced in mushrooms (moreso than i) will be there, and the other two are two girls who have been good friends of mine since my childhood, and havent tripped before...i know that they dont really understand what tripping on mushrooms will be like, no one does until they take them. ive had them read up on some literature of what to expect...but its definitley something that cant be read. my question is, if they start to freak out or have a bad trip, how can i help them get through it, or if possible get out of it...

i searched past posts for this but only found advice for getting out of a bad trip that YOU'RE experiencing..not someone else

thanks in advance for the advice!

Well, just tell them to relax, that no matter what they think, they WILL comedown. Tell them to go with the flow, let it happen, don't get attached to the thoughts they are having, but to let them flow by. Get them to meditate if this doesn't work. If all else fails, log onto the shroomery and we'll do our best........i'm sure you guys will have a blast though, happy trails!   :sun: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :nut:

Reassurance is key. They'll be more anxious than anything if the trip starts going downhill, but let them know that it'll have no permanent effects and soon they'll be coming down. I suppose just be there for them.

When they come down, you can point them in the right direction and hopefully they learn from the trip. It's good to have a rough experience every once in a while, let them take advantage of that if it comes down to it. Might as well make the best of any situation, right? :sun:

I think you guys will have a good time!

Do things to reestablish themselves as competent and in control, self-empowerment and confidence will help anyone out of a bad trip if they believe they can control it.

I had this problem last nite...
buncha my buddies, my girlfriend, and i were tripping...
and at one point my gf left upstairs for some reason, i knew she was starting to take the turn for the worse. I went up after her, and the more i tried to help her, the more she pushed me away.
she said she was gettin annoyed by everything... how do you help someone out when anything u say or do makes them more irritated/mad??
And i'm sure that if i left her alone, she would conjure up some fucked up depressing things, and start crying..

i dont mean to hijack your thread syanesso

that don't panic thing is genius

When I was having my bad trip two things really helped - a blanket and someone telling me "I'll take care of you". Also random sillyness always lightens up the atmosphere.

For mr. otherguy with the girlfriend, having a solitary soul I can understand your girlfriend pushing you back - just tell her that if she needs you she can come see you and leave her to what she wants - there's a certain pride in dealing with your problems by yourself sometimes.

a few different things to try [Re: igor21000] * 1

identify the kind of bad trip
if it is environmental and you can actually fix it - voila!
if it is physical, can they drink some water? voila!
do they need a blanket or to take off binding clothing!
if they are in a psychotic state or dissociated, they may not know you so you need to approach gently with arms down as if towards an animal. you may need to keep your distance. you may need to only mention that you are their friend for afew minutes.
if the situation relates to obsessional logic, you need to get a grip on your own ability to face life in a relaxed feeling way and engage only gently in the logic, towards letting go of the obsession - or to looking at it calmly till it fades.
it can help if you are tripping too, but you must be sensitive, not fake, sharing the plight, after all we are all really in the same scary predicament somehow managing to find something to rejoice about generation after generation.

very good advice! the trip went ok, one of my inexperienced friends forgot who she was and her life, and told me afterwards, who i was, but i guess i helped her through it by relating to what she was going through and talking about it with her. fun day though!

Finally, it is good to see someone notice the fact that we are all in this "scary" predicament.

The key es celebrate.
