Purpose of acid in san pedro recipe
    #3548551 - 12/27/04 05:08 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Hi,

In many recipes you have to add an acid - e.g. lime juice - to the water in which the cactus is being boiled.
Why is this? The only reason I can make up is that it will cause an acid / base reaction, thus creating a salt. And this salt can be dissolved (more) easily in water? But perhaps I am complety wrong! If so, what is it?!

Thanks in advance!

Correct. Addition of the acid makes the extraction of the alkaloids more efficient and expedient.

Thanks for your reply. IOW "mescaline-salt" is more soluble in water than "free base"-mescaline of the alkaloids. Same thing goes for DMT, BTW.

Microscopically, you might imagine cells similarly to the little compartments inside an orange slice. Acids can be used in plant extractions to make the the cell walls disintegrate and further liquify the insides. Then, the connective tissue is discarded.

Anything and everything goes in to those San Pedro brews. Unless there is a chemically signifigant amount of lime juice in so much ugly cactus slime, it may well be just for the flavor.

Pure lime juice is quite a strong acid (ph=2) and not dangerous to health. Currently I'm preparing some cactus juice, ph = 2.8 according to my device. I guess that's strong enough, most recipes consider ph=4 already sufficient!
