What were these shrooms?

Im sorry I do not have any pics, but this summer when I was in northern Maine I went on a canoing-camping trip where I canoed miles and miles away from civilization with a few others. While I was out on the woods on this mini-island I ran into 2-3 shrooms that just looked absolutely beautful. The only description I can give you is that they were like a Neon orange-red. Maybe 4 inches tall. Has anyone heard of Neon orange-red shrooms that they possibly could be, and any description of what they do? (trippy or non trippy) Im sorry for my lack of description , oh do I wish I had a camera..gorgeous!

Leafing through my field guide, there are several orange and orange/red species. Just the color doesn't tell you if it's ok to eat. I didn't find any bright orange ones that were magic, but didn't check every one either.
You did well not to try them. There are mushrooms that can cause a long, terrible death. If you aren't 100% sure, it's Russian roulette.

Look up Amanita Muscarius.
I'm not sure if thats what they are but Amantias have a bright red/orange cap generally with white spots. It's usually the kind you see pictured in posters and such. These make you trip but its VERY VERY different then psilocybin and more dangerous. They can be used but you have to be very experienced. They're usually pretty big too.
Of course like tick tock said there are many many hundreds (thousands I'm sure) of mushroom species and thats a very vague description, even with a picture it can be hard to match. And also like tick tock said...dont eat them
You know theres a mushroom hunting forum here?

My impression is that these were flat-capped rather than dome or round shaped. Is this correct? I am also thinking more orangish yellow than the golden yellow and red of the fly agarics. Kinda like jack-o-lanten orange.
But, I too have mushrooms stored in my memory that i will try to key soon. Start in hunting and read the guides and rules first, it'll help you get started ; ) GL,

Im so sorry for the lack of description, but no, they were not flat topped.
They were domed top, no white spots, not just the top was neon orange/red, the whole thing was. And i mean N e o n, it looked like these babbies would glow in the dark. Kinda like an orange youd see glowing in a black light. Trippy just to look at them.

There are shrooms that glow in the dark, though not active..and I don't think they glow orange, but I could be wrong..but the only ones that ACTUALLY glow in the dark glow green and blue..they arent pschoactive though.
This also doesnt sound like a psychoactive mushroom that I know of...what it is though, I'm not sure and no one can tell you without a picture.

Whoa dude! Thats like, IT! Oh man, whats the name of it? The only difference that I can tell is that the ones I saw had some of the orangish parts around the center of the cap, not edges. But still, nice find!

Ya, im not sure what these are actually, I just remember photographing it previously and since it was so vibrant I couldnt pass it up. I've found this similar ones a few miles from that location on a seperate hunt, not sure if its the same species or not:
But both are very pretty and stand out easily compared to other mushrooms, almost like small flowers. ~D

Those are Hygrocybes. There are a bunch of species in the genus that look like that, and we need several odd details to determine which they are. For example, was the stem slimy? Is the cap bitter tasting?
Happy mushrooming!

Not psychoactive. Most are inedible. Could be a few poisonous, not sure, my books aren't with me and I'm too lazy to google it right now
