Not Growing Up
    #3533283 - 12/22/04 08:18 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

This is my second flush with the mazatapec strain. i have been giving them 12 hours of light a day the lid of the rubber maid container. i know its not transparent but i figure enough light gets threw, but maybe not. any how alot of the shrooms are growing like sideways. i do air exchanges like once or twice an hour sometimes more. i dont know why this is happening, any one have some ideas

Either the lid isn't providing enough light so the mushrooms are spinning around or the sides of the container are transparent enough for light to come in and make the mushrooms grow sides and unusual directions.

Either cut a hole in the lid of your container and glue some plexiglass or similar over it, to create a window through which light can enter, or rig up a basic lighting system in there. Shrooms don't need a lot of light, something pretty weak would be fine. Many people find that gluing a set of christmas lights to the inside of the terrarium lid and leaving them on for four or five hours a day is adequate.

The mushrooms are growing towards the light source. It is harmless and doesn't affect the outcome or yeild/potency. If you want them to grow straight then do like ^^^ said and cut out a window or even easier, switch to a rubbermaid/sterilite container with a clear lid. Peace

cutting a window sounds good, semi present sun would work but not full sun light,or use a small floresent, never heard of the X-mas light thing,I think a blue spectrum helps am i right?

Blue spectrum helps but most lights will contain some blue...not many use xmas lights since they produce alot of heat but they can work, just like LED's or just about any minor light source.

And just for clarification, its not exactly "full" sunlight thats bad..but "direct" sunlight...never put them in front of a window right in the suns rays but in a room where light comes in the window and lights up the room works. The UV radiation has to be absorbed by walls and such before getting to your mushrooms (UV for mush=bad)

It's 3-6 full chamber exchanges per hour (might say 5-6, I can't remember but its around 3-6), so around 80-150 per day is optimal (according to Stamets).

3-6 per day works though.

a 60 watt bulb 10ft above the fruiting chamber with a plexiglass window will work just fine.

Thats a rediculous statment, compact flouros are flouros...flouros produce very little heat. LED's produce even less heat and will cost TONs less. And a 15 watt flouro will cost no more then a 15 watt compact flouro.
