Pinning
    #3546754 - 12/27/04 04:57 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I have been here before asking why my cakes are taking so long to pin. I have followed previous advice, but I seem to have the same problem again and again.

Why are my cakes taking in excess of 21 days to pin every grow that I do?

It would seem that others are achieving results in under 10 days.

I am using a heated propogater for my teratarium...perlite humidification...indirect natural light (7 hours per day)fanning and misting twice per day. Temp range between 60-70 degrees F. Also dunk and roll technique employed.
So what the hell is wrong?
PLEASE HELP
VERY FRUSTRATED!!

10 days is most likely achieved with optimal heating conditions. 74-77 for p.cubensis. Im sure you already know this, so you might want to consider other heating methods.

Perhaps it is the heat? I find that the propergator if left on 24/7 gets too hot and the heat is unevenly distributed. I.E The temp in the middle of the terratarium is hotter that the outside. I guess this is where the heating element is. Any other heating sugestions?

An electronic timer. I picked up two of them at a local department store for about $10 american each.

What kind of terrarium setup?

Using an electronic timer, but still struggling to maintain constant 75 degrees temp. Room temp fluctuates dramatically. See above post for terrarium set up.

im sorry, its late.

You could make a TnT terrarium. The warm water would be a good insulator from the fluctuating temps, also wrapping a blanket around it would help.

My first terrarium

Forget the heat...that will slow down pinning...if your mushrooms are in a room where your comfortable, they should be fine.

In all of your blurbs you mentioned no fanning...if your only fanning when you mist, thats also your problem. You need to be fanning optimally multiple times per hour, but at least 5-6 times a day for optimal conditions. Its obviously pretty hard to fan 2-5 times every hour which is where automation comes in...an airpump (probably on top of the perilite for better air flow) would do you wonders if you arent and dont have time to fan much.

going back to temp control, try finding a thermistat(sp?) controlled heater in the room where your ter. is that will keep multiple ters. in the optimal temp range. you may have to do some testing to find 75 on a cheaper kind, but thats all part of the fun

Any kind for a fish tank, it doesnt have to be underwater, it can sit right on top of the perilite. I'd try under at first but the perilite could block the air. Of course an airpump under 2 inches of geolite and 1 inch of water would be even best and less messy then perilite. Geolite (or lavarock) can be hard to find though.
