Wealth and Happiness
    #3541810 - 12/25/04 09:08 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I read a Princeton study a few months back basically confirming my idea that wealth does not equate to happiness. Has anyone else read this article? I'm trying to find a link but can't.

Why would you need an article to point out the obvious?

--------------------
You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

Because a friend was trying to tell me that money can buy happiness. I don't expect him to take my opinion as gospel so I always try to back up any thoughts with a source.

Money can't buy happiness.

It can help reduce many common causes of unhappiness, but happiness is something you have to find for yourself.

Happiness it simply a mixture of neurotransmitters crossing nerve synapses in one's Brain. Lots of money can buy a never ending supply of crack cocaine. Crack-Cocaine = pure happiness, or replace crack with your drug of choice.

Happiness is just an illusion used by the unconscious to strengthen unconditioned responses.

That's great but I was looking for a recent article, perhaps two months ago.

I think the study you are looking for was done by a guy name Kahneman (sp?), but it's Christmas and I'm not going to look it up right now. Try searching for his work.

--------------------
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniencies attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." - Thomas Jefferson

Found this link after searching for Kahneman. You had the spelling correct, thanks z@z.

http://www.newdream.org/newsletter/growth.php

"In the USA, Canada, and Europe, the correlation between income and happiness is, as University of Michigan researcher Ronald Inglehart noted in 1980s 16-nation study, "surprisingly weak (indeed, virtually negligible.)""

"Even very rich people--the Forbes' 100 wealthiest Americans surveyed by University of Illinois psychologist Ed Diener--are only slightly happier than average.(3) With net worths all exceeding $100 million, providing ample money to buy things they don't need and hardly care about, 4 in 5 of the 49 people responding to the survey agreed that "Money can increase OR decrease happiness, depending on how it is used." And some were indeed unhappy. One fabulously wealthy man said he could never remember being happy. One woman reported that money could not undo misery caused by her children's problems. Examples of the wretched wealthy are not hard to come by: Howard Hughes, Christina Onassis, J.Paul Getty."

"Are we happier today than in 1940, when two out of five homes lacked a shower or bathtub, heat often meant feeding a furnace wood or coal, and 35 percent of homes had no toilet?(11) Or consider 1957, when economist John Galbraith was about to describe the United States as The Affluent Society. Americans' per person income, expressed in today's dollars, was less than $8000. Today it is more than $16,000, thanks to increased real wages into the 1970s, increased nonwage income, and the doubling of married women's employment. Compared to 1957, we are therefore "the doubly affluent society""

"So, believing that a little more money would make us a little happier, and having seen our affluence ratchet upward little by little over nearly four decades, are we now happier?"

"We are not. Since 1957, the number telling the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center that they are "very happy" has declined from 35 to 30 percent. Twice as rich, and a little less happy. In fact, between 1956 and 1988, the percentage of Americans saying they were "pretty well satisfied with your present financial situation" dropped from 42 to 30 percent.(15)"

You're just mad at the S&P thing. But I was actually thinking about that and I would consider it P & L since both affect wealth. Also I can't see a better forum to stick this.

I'm not mad about anything. This just seems like it belongs in S&P.

I thought about that but does S or P better describe the relationship between wealth and happiness or does P,A or L?

Either way, mods move it where it belongs most.
