Shit, that is tragic. Believe it or not, in earlier times, tsunamis and earthquakes like this killed 100,000's...not 10,000. Thank God it was only 10,000 as it could have been MUCH more. 10,000 is still a huge loss of life and terribly sad. Hopefully they can rebuild and move on.

It's probably a lot more than 10,000 sadly... We won't know the actual death toll for a few weeks I'd imagine.

The waves even hit the coastline of Somali, more than 6,000 km away.

I'm afraid the worst is yet to come.. You can basically expect cholera to follow in the wake of a catastrophe like this and the fishermen are hard hit, the small fishermen that feed the poor. Then there's salination of soil.

On the second day of Christmas while we were coping with yesterday's turkey whole neighborhoods were swept away by a six meter flood ramming the shore..

In my country it's customary to celebrate New Year's Eve with lots of fireworks. Despite the diehard pyro I am, this years fireworks money goes directly to their aid

The December Flood of 2004

On the Second Christmas Day
The Ocean washed their Lives away
Without a warning the water came
In death the rich and poor are same
Many thousands on this day drowned
Their own street their burial ground
We sit and sigh by the TV
It happened to them not you or me
But on the Second Christmas Day
The Ocean washed their Lives away

Asia wakes to tidal catastrophe

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4126971.stm

More than 11,500 people are known to have died after a massive underwater earthquake sent giant waves crashing into coastlines across southern Asia.

Global aid teams have joined the effort to find the thousands still missing and to bring help to the hurt and homeless.

The toll from the disaster is set to spiral in the worst-hit areas of Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and Thailand.

The 9.0 magnitude quake - the worst in the world for 40 years - struck under the Indian Ocean off western Indonesia.

It generated a wall of water that sped across thousands of kilometres of sea.

Earlier readings by the US Geological Survey had given a magnitude of 8.9 for the quake but this was raised after further tests.

More than 4,100 died in Indonesia, 4,300 in Sri Lanka and 2,900 in India.

Casualty figures are rising over a wide area, including resorts in Sri Lanka and Thailand packed with holidaymakers.

Exact numbers of people killed, injured or missing in the countries hit, are impossible to confirm.

Hundreds are still thought to be missing from coastal regions and, in Sri Lanka alone, officials say more than a million people have been forced from their homes.

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga declared a national disaster and the military has been deployed to help rescue efforts.

Hundreds of fishermen are missing off India's southern coast, and there are reports of scores of bodies being washed up on beaches.

In Indonesia, communications remain difficult, particularly to the strife-torn region of Aceh where the main quake, early on Sunday morning, was followed by nine aftershocks. Reports speak of bodies being recovered from trees.

A national disaster has been announced in the low-lying Maldives islands, more than 2,500km (1,500 miles) from the quake's epicentre, after they were hit by severe flooding.

The Indian-owned Andaman and Nicobar islands, much nearer the epicentre, were also badly hit.

Casualty reports could not be officially confirmed, but a police chief told reporters 300 people had died and another 700 were feared dead.

Waves forced out from the earthquake are even reported to have reached Somalia, on the east coast of Africa.

And as far away as the Seychelles, nine people were reported missing as a two-metre surge struck.

Resort 'wiped out'

International aid agencies have called for a rapid response to the emergency to avert further deaths.

The European Union immediately pledged 3m euros (?2.1m) to disaster relief efforts.

Messages of condolences have poured in from around the world.

US President George W Bush offered aid to affected nations and expressed sorrow for the "terrible loss of life and suffering".

Harrowing reports of people caught in the devastation and dramatic tales of escape are emerging.

Jayanti Lakshmi, 70, had gone shopping with her daughter-in-law in Cuddalore, southern India. Ms Lakshmi returned to find her son and twin grandsons dead in their hut.

"I wish I had died instead of the others, my daughter-in-law would have a life. I can't bear to watch her pain," she said.

In Thailand, hundreds of holiday bungalows are reported to have been destroyed on the popular Phi Phi island.

Sunday's tremor - the fifth strongest since 1900 - had a particularly widespread effect because it seems to have taken place just below the surface of the ocean, analysts say.

Bruce Presgrave of the US Geological service told Reuters news agency: "These big earthquakes, when they occur in shallow water... basically slosh the ocean floor... and it's as if you're rocking water in the bathtub and that wave can travel throughout the ocean."

Experts say tsunamis generated by earthquakes can travel at up to 500km/h.

Cambodia is shielded from the tsunamis by Thailand. Phnom Pen lies about 100 miles inland measured from the quake's epicenter and lies approximately 15 meters above sea level. In Sri Lanka, which was hardest hit, the flood was reported to be 6 meters high.

My websearch on the flood and Cambodia gave no connection.

Krishna: In all likeliness your friends are OK. Relax and calmly see how you can get information. You can call their embassy and inquire but since they will be getting way too much calls calling a travel agency (or airport to check the flights status to Pnomh Pen) is a good option to get more info. But likely there is no need for worry, as they seem to be out of harm's way.

I PM-ed KRISHNA in two ways that his friends are likely OK since Phnom Pen, Cambodia was unaffected.

PSILYGIRL, please keep us posted when you hear more of your family's friends. We're worried with you and prayers are out for all affected.

Quote:

Indeed. The ones who took this loss are among the less fortunate countries, it's the way of the world, cruel, but it is.

The question is what WE OURSELVES will do with this. If you're religious, a prayer might do it, but I want to bring up the much-dreaded subject of actually donating ca$h to help those in need. I have saved ?50/$65 for the national Dutch New Year's Eve fireworks extravaganza. This year there'll be no fireworks as I will pour that cash directly into a disaster fund that'll undoubtably be created.
I hereby commit myself to donate ?50 to an Asia quake disaster fund

Don't feel obligated or pushed but it would be so great if we, the 6% of the world rich enough to actually afford a computer or the 15% who can afford to get online at least once in our lifetimes, actually shoved a coin up the right slot for once. Come on, swap the New Year's Eve champaign for a good cider and pay up
If you don't believe in private charity aid or are to budgetted to spare a coin it's all good, but let those who can and want to do so.

I'm laying down ?50/$65. Can I see some of that psychedelic community Christmas spirit?

CHENNAI, India (CNN) -- The death toll from Sunday's tsunamis climbed to 21,000 by Monday as fears of disease from decaying bodies and contaminated water grew in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

The giant waves -- triggered by the most powerful earthquake on Earth in 40 years -- also left thousands injured, thousands missing and hundreds of thousands homeless.

A Sri Lankan forecaster warned of a "remote possibility of small tidal waves" caused by aftershocks Monday.

Some of the tsunamis reached as far as 1,000 miles from the epicenter of the 9.0 magnitude quake, which was located about 100 miles (160 km) off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 km).

The quake struck about 7 a.m. Sunday (7 p.m. ET Saturday), according to the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC). It is the fourth-largest earthquake since such measurements began in 1899, according to the NEIC, tying a 1952 quake in Kamchatka, Russia.

More than 10,000 people have been reported dead in Sri Lanka. Most of them, authorities said, were in the eastern district of Batticaloa. Thousands were missing, an estimated 1 million were displaced and an estimated 250,000 were homeless.

In southern Sri Lanka, 200 prisoners escaped when the waves swept away a high-security prison in Matara.

Witnesses in the eastern Sri Lankan port city of Trincomalee reported 40 foot (14 meter) waves hitting inland as far as a half mile (1 km).

The Sri Lankan government declared a state of emergency, and, along with the government of the Maldives, has requested international assistance, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported.

As the sun rose, 20,000 Sri Lankan soldiers and naval personnel launched relief and rescue efforts. India sent six warships carrying supplies, along with helicopters. Priorities included identifying the hardest-hit areas and airdropping supplies, along with shepherding stranded people to safer areas.

Sri Lankan authorities imposed a curfew overnight, and many residents remained concerned about the possibility of additional tsunamis. The country has been in the throes of a civil war, and land mines uprooted by the waves were hampering relief efforts.

Sri Lanka's director of meteorology Abey Singha Bandara told CNN his department's analysis suggested "a remote possibility of small tidal waves, but not of the magnitude experienced on Sunday."

Some tourists, meanwhile, were evacuated from the hard-hit eastern coasts to the capital Colombo, on the west coast and unaffected by the disaster.

At first light, many Sri Lankans ventured out to scour the debris for belongings or to search for information on missing family members.

In India, the official government news agency Press Trust of India said at least 6,200 Indians were killed, and more bodies were being recovered.

A resident of Chennai (formerly Madras) in Tamil Nadu district -- India's hardest-hit area -- said he saw several people being swept out to sea.

Along India's southeastern coast, several villages appeared to have been swept away. Thousands of fishermen -- including 2,000 from the Chennai area alone -- who were at sea when the waves thundered ashore have not returned.

Along the coast, brick foundations were all that remained of village homes. In Tamil Nadu, 2,500 people have been confirmed dead, and officials said 3,000 died on the remote Andaman and Nicobar islands, where dozens of aftershocks were centered. Communication from the islands to the mainland was cut off.

In Thailand, authorities said at least 866 people are dead, and hundreds are missing. Among the missing were scuba divers who had been exploring the Emerald Cave off Phuket's coast.

Phuket's airport -- which closed when its runways flooded -- reopened, but most roads in the area remained closed as officials tried to assess the damage.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra arrived in Phuket and declared the situation "under control." He told CNN he planned to direct rescue and relief efforts overnight.

Witnesses reported guests drowned in their hotel rooms near the coast as 30-foot waves washed ashore.

Others reported narrow escapes, including a Spaniard who had been aboard a boat when a wave approached.

The captain began screaming and turned the boat directly into a nearby shore, where he beached it. As those aboard jumped from the craft and scrambled up the steep beach, they turned back to see the waves crush their boat, the Spaniard said.

More than 4,350 people are reported dead in Indonesia -- many of them in Aceh in northern Sumatra, about 100 miles from the quake's epicenter, officials said.

The quake also inflicted heavy damage on the area, which is a hotbed of rebel activity, before two tsunamis slammed the coastline. Access and communications were difficult if not impossible. The death toll remained a mystery on the west coast of Aceh, where communication had been wiped out.

In the Maldives, 46 people are dead and more than 70 missing, according to Hassan Sobir, the Maldives High Commissioner.

Among the dead are at least 16 non-nationals, including six Britons, six Americans and four Italians, officials from those countries said. Of the Americans, five were killed in Sri Lanka and one in Thailand, U.S. officials said.
No warning

The tsunamis struck with no warning to those in coastal areas, as no warning system exists for the Indian Ocean, said Eddie Bernard, director of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine and Environmental Labs in Seattle.

Staffers at warning centers that cover the Pacific Basin and the U.S. West Coast were aware of the quake and the possibility of tsunamis, said Laura Kong, director of the International Tsunami Information Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

"They were able to make contact, but they did not have the proper government officials to notify," she said. "They'll be working on this in the future."

The earthquake is classified as "great" -- the strongest classification given by the National Earthquake Information Center.

NEIC geophysicist Don Blakeman said the tsunamis were triggered by the initial massive jolt.

"The damage is just phenomenal," said Jan Egelund, U.N. emergency relief coordinator. "I think we are seeing now one of the worst natural disasters ever."

There was disagreement over whether the threat was over. Waverly Person, Blakeman's colleague at NEIC, said the tsunamis are "long over" and residents and visitors should not worry about further tsunamis.

Bernard, however, said the aftershocks are strong enough to produce more tsunamis.

One such aftershock, measuring 7.3 in magnitude, struck about 200 miles (300 km) northwest of Banda Aceh -- on Sumatra's northernmost tip -- more than four hours after the initial quake, according to the NEIC. The center expects the quake to produce hundreds of smaller aftershocks under 4.6 magnitude, and thousands smaller than that.

"A quake of this size has some pretty serious effects," Person said.

The quake represented the energy released from "a very large rupture in the earth's crust" more than 600 miles (1,000 km) long. The rupture created shock waves that pushed the water at speeds of up to several hundred miles per hour.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit anywhere on Earth since March 1964, when a 9.2 quake struck near Alaska's Prince William Sound. The strongest recorded earthquake registered 9.5 on May 22, 1960, in Chile.

Sunday's quake hit a year after a 6.6-magnitude quake in Bam, Iran, killed more than 30,000 people, injured another 30,000 and destroyed 85 percent of the buildings in the southeastern Iran city.

CNN Correspondents Aneesh Raman in Phuket, Thailand; Satinder Bindra in Colombo, Sri Lanka; Atika Shubert in Jakarta, Indonesia; and Suhasini Haidar in Chennai, India contributed to this report

I'm donating $50 to the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Fund since--after watching the news--they seem to be supplying the most immediate effort.

I heard the news about an hour ago. I literally thought the world was going to end as I'd recently watched a programme about Tsunami waves. It was terrifying. Still devasted though. Makes me feel highly insignificant.

thanks for the email and PM, Wiccan_Seeker... that is a big relief for me. i've sent an email out to a friend of mine from the Maldives (she is in Norway right now, though) - i heard on the BBC that they got totally washed out, so i'm quite worried for her family.... also my ex-girlfriend has been in india for the past 6 months - i have no idea where she is, and she has very sporadic internet access, so i'm really worried about her... going to have to call her parents in Paris tomorrow morning to see if they have heard from her...

once the check i deposited today clears, i'll definitely be giving at least $50 to the Red Cross/Red Crescent....

Re: UPDATE: Death toll has risen to 21.000 [Re: Krishna]
    #3550014 - 12/27/04 09:56 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

To give an idea of the magnitude of the catastrophe: In Africa dozens of people drowned and there was great damage in Somalia, Kenya and other nations at 7.000 kilometers from where the Tsunami started
In Sri Lanka alone death toll estimates go upwards of 12.000 dead.
An estimated one-third of all deaths in the 10 countries are children.
The CNN estimate is 22.000 deaths, other sources speak of over 25.000 deaths. Again, over a million people have lost their homes.

On a positive note
the Shroomery community raised $402-$695 well within 12 hours.

Krishna, please realize India is HUGE and the Tsunami reaches several miles inland at the very most. Please keep us posted.

I will propose the idea of a direct Shroomery fundraising to the admins, but I have no idea how efficient that would be and whether such is legally allowed or feasible in another way.

some good news (on my side at least)

friends of mine in phuket were able to contact me and have claimed they are safe (though a bit shocked). they will be flying back to bangkok tomorrow, but seem to be having trouble getting a flight back to london. as long as they're safe....

Good to see the community rallying.

Two of my sister's friends were on Phi Phi island off the coast of Phuket Thailand. Somehow they managed to survive, one was washed out to sea and knocked unconscious, and somehow rescued, she woke up in a hospital. The other was washed out of her cabin, and climbed a palm tree to safety, then spent the night up a hill. It was an anguishing time waiting for news of her, and a relief to hear she was safe. They were both incredibly lucky.

I'm donating to the red cross tomorrow...I think everybody should donate at least something...

keep this thread going guys

everyone seems to be affected by this, especially those who went on holiday to these areas....

there's news here that 200 finns are still missing, the reality of it all, they're probably dead.

- mr boO's coworker went to phuket on holiday, no text messages or phone calls back from him. everyone's worried.
- close friend of ours here in helsinki, some of his family friends went to phuket again on holiday. 2 children under 10 dead, wife missing (possibly dead) but the father is alive and in the hospital

terrible terrible..hitting every community hard i bet...

my heart goes out to all of those affected. Mother Earth has a way of letting us know just how small we really are sometimes.... tragic. All she's gotta do is twitch and humanity is never the same. And it's unfortunate that given the "1st world's" attention span, most will likely forget in a week or two. The real tragedy has yet to come when the massive loss of infrastructure is truly felt. The instantaneous impact is nothing compared to that. Anyone remember how quickly the world forgot the quake in Iran? the folks on my side of the pond sure did... $50 to ICRC here and there is all good, but this tragedy has me filled with this sorrow that $50 can't mend. I read about the reports of people finding loved ones washed up on shore. I see the photos of a mother holding her dead child and just flat lose it... it's just senseless. I keep imagining myself in the shoes of someone truly affected by this and I can't come close to comprehending the sense of utter loss. I can't be a pretentious american and forget this.

And great... GWB promised aid money. I respect that, but why do I feel like he'll fuck it up? Remember, he promised all that aid to Africa to fight AIDS, but then backed out because he only wanted to support abstinence only programs and treatment programs that used american drugs that cost 3x as much. He gives with one hand and takes with the other. He's the f'ing king of bouncing good will checks.

god, life is so fragile...

my fathers coworkers are okay, we still havent heard from family friends in in phuket :frown:

I asked my father to ask his company to donate since they do so much business over there, I really hope they do!

It sounds like the relief effort is finally getting underway, with makeshift hospitals set up and such.

It just goes to show you that no matter how much money you have, mother nature has the last word

i really feel for those who have lost or lost word of their loved ones. hopefully none of this online mushroom community have lost their lives, but i'll bet scores of us have been affected in some way. i have family in singapore and taiwan, and was very releived to hear they were ok, it must be awful to still be wondering.

will donate about $40 USD as soon as the ifrc.org site is back up. I don't have a job right now and am on limited funds, but when I start work again this week I'll donate more probably.

edit: the site is back up but slow...gonna go ahead and give $67 now until I get my first paycheck.

I am so happy, because their company works alot in Sri Lanka and Thailand.

We are still awaiting the news of 2 family friends in phuket... but all the people who are involved in the company and their immediate relatives are okay.

I am so glad my fathers company did this, it brought tears to my eyes

It truly breaks my heart to hear this news, especially as I spent some time living and working in Thailand earlier this year. The Similan and Surin islands in the Andaman Sea are my favourite places on earth and from all reports they are completley devastated.
It will be a very long time before all the hard-hit areas will recover. I really wish I was there now to help out in some small way. For now I'll be giving what I can to the Red Cross.
It's great to see so many people doing what they can to help our neighbours overseas.

Wow that 150K is wonderful!
Slowly the disaster unfolds. I don't recall who wrote this but the collapse of the infrastructure will be felt for years to come.

The World Health Organisation stated that the number of deaths may double due to disease. On the news I saw temples, mosques and streets with 100s of dead people rowed up in them.
Make no mistake people: this disaster is comparable in severity to a small scale nuclear exchange.

The United Nations have called this "one of the greatest natural catastrophies in recorded history" and are organizing "the largest humanitarian mission EVER undertaken"

On a positive note I have contacted www.giro555.nl (the Dutch united charities w/ all the big names, Red Cross, Unicef etd) and have made good on my promise and have donated 50 Euro = $68 to their Tsunami fund. I could do this by online bank transfer with no fuss at all.
People, please look for international funds that allow online donations and post the links here so I can C&P them into the sitewide Shroomery Tsunami Action page.

We likely are going to erect a charity fund of our own but it is of vital importance that you donate NOW if you can because the disaster and cost will increase with every day.
The Shroomery Community has already commited itself to donate over $1.000

It's so great to be a Shroomerite

all these kind words and donations are comforting in a time like this, i have donated all i can, a little over 600 dollars and i am for sure going to be donating more but for know i am using the last of my savings to help get a few friends that survived back home in the us. i lost 8 friends and 6 people that were piratically family in this huge disaster. I have a very close friend who moved from Thailand in 88 and has been living with me since and he was there with most of my friends on Christmas vacation, i stayed here for family reasons. and now i wont be able to see most of them again, i have been told that many of them was found and placed in a mass grave and their belonging are gonna be brought back here with the remaining survivors when they are able to get home. my condolences go out to everyone else who has had someone lost in this tragedy. and thanks to everyone who has made a choice to help out in this time of need. many people including myself owe everything to you people, if it was not for you all and your kind words and donations it would be a much harder experience to make it through.

yes the tsunami watch centre in honolulu hawaii claim that they had known that a tsunami would hit but didn't know which appropriate people to tell...it's not really so much the blame on america but i suppose a bunch of miscommunication? not really sure i'm sort of feeling a bit iffy about how come they didn't contact ANYONE about this..

I'm sure it will get much higher, as they havent even began to really even assess the damage in Indonesia, it's comprised of thousands of islands, all of which surely had severe damage. Millions of people live in these low-lying coastal areas...

Please don't compare to 9-11, that was a horrible man made tragidy that has no comparison to a natural disaster besides the fact that people died in them both.

Let's not blame people, institutions, nations.. Let's not compare it to other events that came to pass.

Possibly 100.000 people.. Unreal...
I got a huge pot of vitamin pills. It holds 250 pills. If every pill was someone who died or will die, those are 400 pots of 250 pills..
Unreal numbers...

It's so incredible how people donate so generously..
We truely are a community that cares, but now we too are hit.

I payed up my 50 Euro = $68.. I might donate again. This is so terrible and so many people threat this as (excusez) "just another disaster".

I just pressured my two Christian friends into donating by blackmailing them with the bible
I will make an Fwd: email tomorrow and spread it around. Please incite people around you to give generously.
Donating is not a lottery: if you donate you always win because you do a good thing and if you don't believe in karma you may believe in a balance of some sort.

Donating felt and feels far better then those fireworks ever could.
I will never come to regret that donation because I had saved up the money and could spare it. I just hope people co?rdinating the Humanitarian Mission will not forget Somalia and Kenya who were also hurt bad. People.. a disaster from southeast Asia to east Africa, from Thailand to Kenya, a disaster area about 5.000 miles wide... Think of all those tiny fisher villages that are hardly mapped at all.. We might startle beyond our cringing at the true death toll..
It's hot out there. The germs are multiplying for days now. Fishermen have not been bringing in the food and people are homeless for days..
Like I said, this disaster is in the same order of magnitude as a small-scale nuclear exchange..

.

there are already reports of diarhea and chicken pox in sri lanka :frown:

you know what I'm hoping for? Bill Gates. I know it sounds stupid, but his foundation has been doing a lot of work in SE Asia, specifically with medical relief. He could drop a couple billion on this, not feel it in his wallet, and still make a massive difference. I promise to take back all the nasty things I've said about him if he does come through with loot.

unfortunately, doesn't seem like bill gates will be donating so much money. it's reported that he'll just be donating 3 million dollars.

Put's things into perspective doesn't it.
This giant ball of rock is in constant flux and by association
so are we. Add that picture to the vastness of the universe and
we quickly see how very fragile things are.

Nice to see people immediately root in compassion. Saw that after
9/11 also. In times of devastation people center in the heart.
It seems that people(some)instinctively ground in love as if they were
guided from some pre-birth memory of whats real. It's to bad we need
terrorist and tidal waves to awaken love on a global level.

It's funny how the majority of ppl here can't or feel they shouldn't donate even a dollar but then can spend hundreds on drugs.
EDIT: Let me rephrase that, it's SAD not even funny at all.

One cannot compare disasters but if you look at hard figures you could coldly conclude this disaster is of greater magnitude since over five million people have become homeless according to the UN and that merely reflects the houses that completely collapsed.

125.000 confirmed dead...
If every cross (+) represented a dead human being, then this

+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +

+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +

+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +  + + + + +
+ + + + +

...then this would merely represent one-thousandth of the people who are confirmed dead and if it represented the people who have lost their home, then their number would be forty-thousand times higher then this.
It is so unreal.. We cannot comprehend the incredible scale of a catostrophy like this.

I have updated the action page and among other things I have included a direct link to footage shot by someone close to the beach of Phuket, Thailand, when the second Tsunami wave rolled inland. It is very graphic but without visible death.

I.. have to keep upping the death toll.. I kicked off the Shroomery campaign when there was an estimation that "there might be as much as 8.000 deaths". But it immediately was clear to me how this disaster had to be way, way more destructive then that. When this thread started the word was: "estimated 10.000 dead"
And now.. 125.000 confirmed dead and it keeps rising.

I've kicked off this emergency action and am still working it, donated my fireworks money, blackmailed my Christian fundamentalist friends with their own Bible until they coughed up the dough, I have released forwarding-emails to my network of friends to pass on the message and donate to the charities and am contemplating whipping up a rudimentary action website. I have sent a mass-email to a community of 1.000 people I am part of. But it's not enough, it never is, and I know I'm not at all the only one who went into overdrive for the people.

Today I got an email from a girl I occasionally chat with. One line:
my ex have some friends who died in Thailand...
This is a global catastrophy, several Shroomerites have similar tragic tales to tell.

My love goes to all of you who care to read this, who donate prayers and money and work for the people. Bless our Community, in the wake of the flood of death a flood of Love comes and the Shroomery, our online Community, is one of the places where this love comes straight from the heart.

Let the Love guide our hearts, and let us, like Chinacat72 said, hold onto that love

Update: 135.000+ dead, 5.000.000+ homeless.

The death toll seems to be tapering.. which is to say.. it was upped by 10.000 deaths over the last day instead a manyfold of that.

About Gates' $ 3M..
He wouldn't even be interested to buy a yacht that cost a mere $ 3M.
I think his exploitation of low wages of the third world nations now struck by this catastrophy easily are $ 3M a day.
A large portion of the world's poor, at an income of about $1 a day, earn about $20.000 in their entire lifetime. At a personal capital of $54 billion I guess Bill Gates is more important then 2.750.000 human lives. If only somebody busted that piggybank wide open and blew it all on something silly like ending world hunger.
Even if he didn't earn a dime anymore and spent a million dollars a day from now on he still has 44.000 million dollars he could find a better use for. I, for one, could not live with that greed.

But enough with hogging billionaires, just look at what the Shroomery is doing. Look at the poll result of what we all have raised from our far more modest wages thus far. We're actually making it happen, we're well into the thousands of dollars at this point at five days after we  kicked off our Shroomery fund-raising rally.
Let's by all means go on but we can already be proud of our Community. Where many a drugsite says l0lz and does nothing we actually were right there on the third day of Christmas, committing ourselves to donations while most charity orgs were still blankly staring at the TV screen. An hour after kickoff we had already passed the $250 mark.
A worldwide Internet Community? you betcha!
Psychedelic people? Absolutely.
Beautiful people? Oh yes

At the turn of 2004 to 2005 we can be proud to be Shroomery people

If everyone in America donatated $1, we would have $350 MILLION dollars for these people. Think if every single person donated what they could. There could be a good use for McDonalds or some other corporate whore in this case too, if the media donated some time as well, every tv and radio station could advertise for 30 seconds maybe 5-10 times a day for people to take their donations to the nearest McDonalds and have volunteers there to accept them and compile them.

Much love and tears for all the people who lost love ones and loved places.

Remember the disaster area is vast and that a Muslim Imam does not call the shots to withold all aid. Priests will be priests, don't worry about that one.

UPDATE: I added a page from CNN that lists dozens of online charities that can take online donations for the Tsunami Disaster. Several of these charities have got religious, dogmatic or political agendas so make sure you pick the charity that best suits the aid you feel is needed.

Quote:

Oh Gods.. If that checks out the death toll might be as high as 180.000 as Indonesia was estimated as 80.000
Let us hope the Unicef spokesman was misinformed, but the Indonesian province of Atjeh was extremely close to the epicenter ("Ground Zero")  from where these Tsunami's formed.. :frown:

was it india's prime minister manmohan singh? india so far is the only country refusing international help due to the fact that they do have the resources to help their citizens affected themselves, though he is receiving international criticism for this.

in regards to aid, aid organisations and the sri lankan government are in disagreement with the tamil tigers who at this moment still control the northern area of sri lanka. the tamil tigers are asking for aid assistance but have told organisations/government that give the aid to them THEY will distribute the aid themselves. this is causing controversy because people believe that the tamil tigers will just stockpile the aid and use it on their own soldiers without really giving it to the ordinary people who need it. sticky situation :frown:

it's really difficult to see the before and after of the aceh province which was affected. i'm not surprised if indonesia has lost just 125,000 alone...when you see the amount of rubble in the after picture it's a miracle that people have actually lived through the earthquake/tsunami.

my personal new years celebration was nice but of course since people have been watching the news about this tsunami it was also pretty quiet. i met a couple at the party i was at for new years who just came back from the khao lak area of phuket which was heavily affected and where the most finnish casualties were in. the stories they told....geez, they're lucky to be alive

That's the price you pay for tropical beachfront property within the Pacific Ring of Fire. Anybody in the effected area should not be surprised that a Tsunami would have those consequences. I will donate no money for them to rebuild their villages on the beachfront, only for them to be wiped out by another "surprise" Tsunami. They should head to the highlands of their respective areas(which I am certain that they wont).

what the hell? are you implying that it's these people's fault that a lot are dead because they lived by the coast or beach? before we had the technology to even KNOW about or NAME the ring of fire there were people living near the coast /beach. what else do most people have? i mean c'mon a lot of the people dead relied on the sea for food and money (fishing). generations upon generations have done this...and it's their fault cause they lived near the coast/beach?

there have been media reports of people respecting the fact that they can't move back to where they used to live because of the extent of devastation to the area. a lot of survivors like banda aceh or sri lanka have been SCARED to go back to where they used to live...

Hey, if you for *whatever* reason cant bring yourself to help the humans who are devasted by this terrible disaster, maybe you can instead help the animals.

"Food, water and shelter for homeless and displaced animals are badly needed in the hardest-hit areas of Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, and Indonesia in the wake of the deadly tsunami. Make a donation to HSI, the international arm of The Humane Society of the United States, to support efforts to deliver relief to animal victims and their caretakers."

I put down that I was contributing $5- $10 dollars. I never donate money to anything, rather I always give caned food and hygine products to the local church groups... I do not trust charitable organizations, because under law they are only obligated to give 1/3 of what they collect to charity.

I am not implying anything, I am flat out stating that it was/ is their choice (not fault) where they reside on the Islands. An example of what I'm driving at is- people in Florida are yearly bombarded by hurricanes and tropical storms which always cause death and destruction, yet they always seem surprised that a hurricane is there at all, and often plan on staying around for next years storm season.
Why not live in Hawaii? IT IS A F*#king VOLCANO!!
Why not move to Florida? YEARLY MASS DESTRUCTIVE HURRICANES!!
Why not live directly on the beach of an island on the edge of the active Pacific rim??? EARTHQUAKES AND TSUNAMIS!!!
Hopefully the survivors will take this lesson from Nature to heart.
I am not trying to appear ignorant of the horrible loss of life, those who perished are pretty much just a number in the media now.
My thoughts are for those who died, but my money won't help them now will it?

Your money will help raise the parent-less children.

People in other countries do not have the same opportunities that we do as far as relocating and such. For many, they knew nothing of the world outside.

As far as people in Florida, yeah fuck them... not for the same reason though... they move down there because it is warm and want to retire and what not. They have a choice. Hurricanes and such are known to happen all the time. When was the last time you remember hearing about a 9.1 on the Richter Scale? Isn't a 10 total destruction of the planet?

What really gets me is the video clips of the ocean receding an half mile, and all of these people chased it down. Shit, they knew they couldn't swim, so what were they thinking? If I ever saw the ocean go back like that, chasing it would be the last thing that I do. There is obviously a problem if the water goes back that far... On another note, I didn't see any crazies trying to surf the waves. Usually here in the US during the hurricane season you will see clips on CNN of people surfing during the onset of a hurricane.

Yearly hurricanes and tornadoes are ONE thing. It's not as if the Tsunamis come EVERY year. Not like this.

Really, if you think about it, FIVE MILLION HOMELESS... That's like *HALF* of the *COUNTY* of Los Angeles going homeless, all at once. This isn't a hurricane. This is a FUCKING TSUNAMI.

Good night... Keep up the good work good shroomerites.

The second I saw the ocean recede like that, I would have run faster than a cheetah. That is a classic sign of a tsunami. But, I happen to watch a lot of the National Geographic channel and the Discovery channel, so I knew that. It's probable that some of those tourists and locals were absolutely unaware of the danger.

That is true that they probably never learned anything about how the ocean is is that way Randal. It irks me though... you would have to know that something is up, that is a lot of freaking water.

from a good friend...

""As a Hado (vibration) researcher, I am truly worried about this disaster. As well as the hygiene issue, I feel that the "vibrational fields" of the countries have extremely deteriorated. The "field" is created by feelings of fear, grief, worry, lack of trust, anger, loneliness, and helplessness, and could energize the malevolent
microorganisms that prefer this kind of environment.

People cannot help but have these feelings, and they probably carry the feelings with them. Many people feel this way, and there seems to be some plundering going on, but their feeling of anger and hostility can only multiply the negativity of the "field". Also, we must take into account the emergence of a new epidemic.

We have to limit the negative "field" in any way possible. I believe that there is already a spreading Hado (vibration) of fear due to the terrorist attack and bombing, and it is like a gasoline station with an oil leak that is about to explode.

What can we do? The only way is for people from all over the world to pray for the recovery of the affected area. The prayer will definitely carry far with the purity of its Hado. Therefore, from today, let's close our eyes for a few second before our meal and send words of prayer to the countries. Let's send a prayer for them before we go to sleep. Also, when we pray during the end of year and
the new year ceremony, let us send a prayer first and foremost for world peace.

Through the research of the water crystal over the last ten years, I have proven that people's pure energy of consciousness can change the water in areas that people have prayed for, regardless of the distance. Also, the most effective Hado prayer is the feeling of Love
and Thanks. Now is the time to send everyone's feeling of Love and Thanks to the earth's water.

Please forward this message to everyone you know.

Masaru Emoto""

Natural disasters are natural disasters, and dead people are dead people, no matter if its a hurricane or tsunami, and no matter how many die one or one million.

Here's a private mail I got form a non-Shroomerite :frown:

-snip-
In october, I was in Sri Lanka with my boyfriend. We stayed at the west-coast and met the nicest people you can only imagine. They were just making the step from a former colony to an independend industrial  country. And now, all of this is literally swept away. To only think of all the people we met who are now probably dead. Every time, I see the news, I almost cry. See, I'm doing it again. It is one of the most wonderful places in world full of smiling, friendly people. They are so proud of moslems, hinduists, buddhists and christians living together. Now they help each other carrying away corpses.
.
The train, that was washed away by the flood was the one, we always took. There people get up to let you sit. Others are going from waggon to waggon to sell something to eat. Families take it to celebrate the da! y of the full moon (the poya day) with all of their relatives. And at times, it is cramped with kids going back home from school. Sri Lanka does a lot for their children, having an alphabetism-rate of 92%.
.
We promised a boy in the mask-museum to send him pictures we took if him. Now, we wonder, if he will get them. Or if it will be a nice reminder for his relatives.
-snip-

Small world, friends.. And it just got smaller by 140.000 people :frown:

The best place to make a donation is : http://redcross.org/donate/donate.html

They only take credit card online though. You can mail them cash, or donate at your local redcross.

"We at PayPal wish to express our profound sorrow over the suffering and loss of life resulting from the earthquakes and tsunami in South Asia and Africa. You can help those affected by this disaster by donating directly to UNICEF's Tsunami Disaster Relief effort using your PayPal account."

"PayPal will waive all fees in relation to the donation, so that UNICEF will receive 100% of the amount you donate."

Just 1 thing there, Grateful Jim...your sig implies that some "HA bad ass" wanted to beat the fuck outta Bill Graham. Not so...what people seem to forget that if you're promised something & that person reneges, that is a scumbag who needs a lesson taught...& not the Angels exclusively. That would go for any aspect in society. & the 'bad ass' was Ralph 'Sonny' Barger, undisputed leader for 40+ yrs of 50,000+ members in 30+ countries.
I'd like to see some country's leader last that long. :stoned:

Xionide- The United States government is helping the survivors in many more ways than any monetary figure could relevantly describe.
We have "Warships" over there delivering food, supplies and freshwater to the survivors, all of which are much more immediately valuable than any money.
What is it with people these days?
It seems to be all about numbers and bigger numbers, and money and more money.
THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE DEAD HERE! WHO CARES HOW MANY? WHO CARES WHICH COUNTRY SENDS MORE MONEY?
