Shop-Vac HEPA flow hood?
    #3543575 - 12/26/04 02:47 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Filter

Shop-Vac

If I made a pre-filter box and connected it to the Shop-Vac intake, and the HEPA filter to the output and built this into a flow hood, would it suffice?

How large a flow hood would I be able to build?

Here's a list of Shop-Vacs and their corresponding CFM and static pressure ratings. I can't find the exact model shown on the Wal-mart site. They seem to all be industrial vacs but even the ones with only 1.75 - 2.5 hp get over 100 CFM.

Probably not. The air speed will be too fast and those filters dont seal that good

Most Shop Vac type hepa filters say HEPA. But, at what RATE are they effective. I believe they are like 95%, rather than 99.97% effective. Which is sadly the same as WORTHLESS for flowhood purposes.

Moreover, that Shop Vac filter material appears single baffle & THIN. So.... how effective will it be over time. My foaf's 99.97% effective Hepa filter is 6 inches thick & multipe baffle.

Could you post that link? It didn't show up. I've got a large one that I was thinking of using in a little bit different way- just using as the air supply to a home built box with my ULPA filters.

Actually the motor is detachable as a leaf-blower, so I'd probably put that into a prefilter-box. That would help control the noise too.

I'll make a sliding-door vent to control the pressure in the plenum, if it's too high.

The squirrel cage blower I got is too low-powered (was misrepresented). Plus, I would only need this setup a few times a year. With a flexible plenum and Shop-vac air supply, it would be collapsible and storable- nice for my small house.

Something I've been thinking about for a while, but haven't gotten around too.

One thing that many people over look is that the airflow is laminar.  That means that the flow of air is smooth and even and all flowing in the same direction.  I guarentee that those circular filters will always give you turbulent airflow.  That means no matter how pure the air comes out of the filter, it will draw contaminated air into your work area.

You're a mod and there have been a million noobs posting about using these crap filters.  I have seen no answers in this thread that havent already been posted, including my own.  :wtf:

Adding another pressure barrier would eliminate turbulence.

Now explain the benefits of high pressure HEPA over low pressure HEPA considering that noise is not an issue for someone trying to build a functional ghetto flowhood.

I have never seen a functional ghetto flowhood. But I invite you and everyone else to prove me wrong.

You can search high and low for a good deal but it will not be ghetto, it will simply be a good deal. Like mine, I spent less than $50 on it.

If you want to cut corners, just get a clear rubbermaid, cut two holes in it for your arms and call it a glovebox. $10 spent, use peroxidated agar and done.

i just use a plastic container propped up on one side with coffe mugs so that i can get my hands under it. I have never had a contam problem due to my shitty glove box

Can you share details how you made your flowhood for less than $50?

Watch eBay like a hawk. The hawk will sit quietly on his perch until he is guarenteed a quick cheap and easy meal.
