Do any fungi leave behind hard durable mycelium?
    #3515586 - 12/17/04 11:04 PM (19 years, 2 months ago)

I've been reading about organic archetecture (adobe, cob, papercrete, etc.) and I know some mushrooms leave behind hard fruitbodies that will last for a few years.

I was just wondering if it would be possible to grow a mycelium on sawdust, and then dry it out at it's peak of health and use that as a building material.

Has anyone any experience with dried substrate of a particular species that was impressively hard or strong?

Isn't Reishi fairly hard? How hard is the dried substrate?

Everything I've grown on cardboard and dry out is
harder than the original cardboard.

Do any species in stand out in your mind as being particularly durable?

Reishi and artist conk are for sure.
Wine cap and they're blueing cousins
increase the hardness of cardboard, a lot,
once dried.

Are you going to make something?

I like the idea a lot. The mycellium knits the
substrate together into the shape you want
and adds strength.

one could grow a shell out of fungus, then somehow dry the shell
and coat it entirely with something that wont let water through.
that way ud at least have the material natural.
peace ohm :mushroom2:

I'd like to experiment with using soiltac as a binder and waterproofing. It's not natural, but it is non-toxic.

Reishi is hard but not hard enough.

Why not make your house out of bails of straw. Thats a mushroom substrate and it has been used for houndreds of years. You just need to live in a relatively dry climate.

I'm not building with reishi. I'm experimenting with using reishi mycelium as a binder component of a construction material. Are you suggesting that I use Reishi to harden bales of straw? I'm not sure what your point is. Where I live is not exactly a rain forest, but it's far from dry.

I think it's likely that I will at least be able to produce something comparable to particle board.

This thread has been in GG&MM for a while now. I thought I would let it get tossed around in here for a while and see what happens.

I say you use a good strain of cubensis and line your inner walls with mycelium... then you will have a constant food supply...  :mushroom2: :crazy2:

GG&MM lists "Psilocybe mushrooms" along with Oyster, and King Stropharia as examples of species that form particularly strong mycelial mats that bind the substrate tightly together. (p. 111)

Oddly enough, no mention of Ganoderma.
