There is no English word for a type of feeling which the Japanese call yugen, and we can only understand opening our minds to situations in which Japanese people use the word.

"To watch the sun sink behind a flower-clad hill, to wander on and on in a huge forest without thought of return, to stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that disappears behind distant islands, to contemplate the flight of wild geese seen and lost among the clouds." All these are yugen, but what have they in common?

What about wistful?

Nevermind, I looked it up and it doesn't mean quite what I thought it did.

Well, basically we know what is happening even though we can't see it.

We can't see the sun once it is done sinking behind a flower-clad hill, but our minds can fill in the blanks not visible to us. After the boat disappears behind distant islands, we are left to contemplate where the boat went, but we don't really know. Same with the geese.

The one I can't seem to make fit in is the one about the person wandering on and on in a huge forest without thought of return.

To lose oneself in an external flowing moment. Not contemplate anything, just witness, let it be?

unconditional love?

and little off topic maybe but:

"He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts."

I Corinthians 4:5

--------
"No matter how fast light travels it finds
the darkness has always got there first,
and is waiting for it."

Terry Pratchett

------

"... and what communion hath light with darkness?"

II Corinthians 6:14

----

"You can't have a light without a dark to stick it in."

Arlo Guthrie

-By my reckoning, however, lightness and darkness exist as degrees of themselves. No light is ultimately brilliant, nor is any shadow without some character of lightness.

goggeling the word, lead me to that :P http://entrenousphoto.com/

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

"There is no English word for a type of feeling which the Japanese call yugen"

from your examples id say:

-awe
-amazement
-sublime
-wonder

i think those are all pretty close to yugen.

"ineffable"

Skorp is being too vague, imo, as to what Yugen is, so I did a search on it:

"Yugen avoids the obvious and relates to the subtleties of nature. It is the suggested rather than the totally revealed aspects of it. It involves partly hidden views of indistinct areas sometimes relative to shadows, partial reflections and darkly revealed forms. Yugen hints at extra layers of meaning which are not at first obvious to the casual viewer. It also involves things which are subtlely profound. A NIWA is a collection of subtleties in its pond reflections, stone and sand symbolisms and shadow areas."

http://www.niwa.org/Yugen.html

"Experiences unfold themselves like a mystery thriller revealed with clues and surprises. It would hardly be a thriller revealed in a Vulcan monolog. We are thrilled by experiences in life by seeing the possibilities revealed in bits and pieces that slowly come together to create the whole picture, the grand finale.

"What would a James Bond movie be if the middle was cut out and we only saw the beginning and end? We need all the pieces of the picture to see the whole picture. Leave out a tree, or an open doorway revealing something new, or the warrior without his sword and enemy ? there is no whole. We need to see the lotus flower as it unfolds to grasp its full beauty.

"What if we left out Shime and jumped to Oku? What would be missed of the whole picture? In Shime we study completion, from the beginning of the art to its end, each piece revealing itself as the art unfolds like the lotus flower. Inside it?s full of surprises for those who are committed to the journey. The art moves with its own spirit, turning in unpredictable ways to become something surprising. Japanese literature asserts that all great works of art embody yugen in which we get a glimpse of the secrets of the eternal world. Yu-gen means cloudy-impenetrable?obscure, unknowable, mysterious and beyond intellectual rationale.

"Experiences in life unveil bits and pieces of the picture, each petal of the lotus flower unfolding to reveal its own beauty. Seeing through the mist that momentarily clears to reveal yet another mystery to search?Yugen. The whole art must be completed before it is fully revealed.

"It occurs to me that those of us in Jujitsu experience these moments of revealing in so many places. Jujitsu is experiential. You need to practice it, interacting with a variety of people. So much more is revealed in exposure to mysteries in any event - other dojos, the convention, by our professors and masters of the art, even from?well, especially from the white belts. That?s how we get it?immersion training. That?s how the mysteries are revealed."

http://www.sonic.net/~jeffp/yugen.htm

"yugen"

"Yugen in Japanese art implies mysterious skills that can be felt but not put into words. The poet Fujiwara Teika established ten categories of beauty and yugen was among the ten forms. Perhaps the English word "symbolism" hints at yugen."

http://www.michionline.org/resources/Glossary/Y/yugen.html

I can see why Skorp says that there is no word for it in the English language. We have to take words and words to describe what the Japanese simply call Yugen.

To me, yugen is like listening to a sigur ros song (or singing in another language in general).
