    #3542497 - 12/25/04 07:17 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

hey i dont have a pressure cooker, was wondering if a large sized boiling pot would suffice to sterilize my jars? has anybody else tried this with good results? does it make it a lot more difficult or time consuming not having a pressure cooker? :mushroom2: :sun: :mushroom2:

If you are going to do - grains - WBS - you need a PC.

You can do it; I usually just boil for 45 min. But you're going to have a lot less control over whether or not your jars become contaminated. I usually just do 8 1/4 pint jars. I've had times when only one becomes contaminated and I've had times when 6 or 7 do.
I do this as a hobby and I have a lot of patience. Therefore, losing jars to contaminants doesn't really bother me that much. If you're doing this for other reasons and want to maximize what you get from what you've bought, then I suggested you buy a pressure cooker because it will definately worth it in the long run after you've got the hang of things.
