    #354242 - 07/13/01 10:13 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

ive cultivated with 1/2 pint jars alot and id like to move on and try my luck with quart jars and rye grain. on every tek ive heard of it says to pressure cook it but i dont have a pressure cooker!! i do have a large pot that has a nice lid that i can boil with though (what i use to do my 1/2 pints). will this work to sterilize the rye? can i maybe use an oven or microwave?

Well.. so the story goes.. A Pressure cookers is BEST to have... You can use just a boiling pot of water with a tight lid and a rag on the bottom for doin jars with brown rice flour & vermiculite. However; if you are doing grains, birdseed, rye.. etc.. (Thing's much more suseptible to contaminants) A pressure cooker is a good investment. It's great for cooking too If you need to make a quick sauce or something..

You will hardly get rye strerile without a pressure cooker. Should you try it, add the required amount of water to the rye and let soak overnight. Then cook for 2 hours.

Dude ...the mycological possibilities with a P/C are awsome ... think about it ...in a 1/2 pint jar you have only 1/4 cup of flour for your spores to grow on...in a quart jar its all there to grow on no verm to worry bout ect ... and you get to shake da jars every so often when you germinate your spores(makes you feel busy)

Uhhh sorry dude what were ya saying I'm a lil high here or something ...

i just went down to the Big K-Mart and they had a 4.2 quart pressure cooker made for canning jelly and it was $25.99. there was another one that was 6 quart but it was shorter and i dont think it would fit a quart canning jar. i want to get the 4.2 quart one, it says that it is like 10 pounds pressure. is this enough? i also went to the health food store where i get my brf and they had whole rye grain flour. is that the right kind of stuff to use?
