An early christmas find in California

Welp, these are from a couple weeks ago...but I found a BUNCH of these suckers growing on a hill after a couple weeks worth of some MUCH needed rain in Southern California.
Does anyone know what they are, and if they are edible? Thanks again guys.

looks like a False (wooly) chantrelle to me... notice the gills. True chantrelles (which are delicious if you ever find some!) don't have true gills.

Hrm, the false chantrelles I've seen have a light red wooly exterior and are always more cone shaped. If it was closer to purple I'd say it's a blewit. Shrug. Edit: I just found this pic I took this fall of the false wooly chantrelles, gomphus floccossus I think. Dunno if it helps. -BP

needs more description if you want a good ID
my first thought is Paxillus, if so the print would be brownish. none of the genus is worth eating, some are poisonous.

This is a blewit I found in the cascades this fall. Like I said, apart from the color they look similar. I've only hunted edibles a couple of times but that's my observation.

Those were ID'd by the pugeot sound mycological society BTW. I was told they appear at the end of the edibles season when chantrelles are dying off. Blewits can in fact be that color at times also. Take a look:

It does look similar but don't eat it yet. Take a spore print, hopefully it will turn out pale tan, something like this:
Blewits are among the tastiest edibles there are, though I've heard that some people have allergic reactions to them. I made stir frys and omlettes out of the ones in the photos, yumm.

Be careful with those. They look too much like Omphalotus olivascens for me to consider eating...but they might glow in the dark.
Anyhow, check out the Jack-o-lantern mushrooms at:

Those do look similar, that's good advice joe.
Did you ever get a spore print from these?

well they appear to be a type of Agarics (Gilled Mushrooms)
if the gills exuded any milk then i would assume they are a type of Lactarius
tough call tho
we would need more information, and a spore print
