Can anybody point out distinctive features of the aminita muscaria for me? I would also like to know if anybody can tell me if its normal for one to grow in louisiana. I always see this little red toadstools with the white dots on it everywhere in my area mostly growing around trees or under them in the fields i pick shrooms in and even in yards. or atleast give me a linke that points out how i can distinctively tell its an aminita. thanks guys o and next time i find one ill take a pic for you guys

well I read something a year or so back from a trusted mycologist that theres a strain of amanita muscaria which has a more yellowish tint to the stem other than paper white which we usualy see, and in these yellow stemmed muscarias is some sort of toxin... its not a deadly toxin, but it contains something that irritates your stomach and bowels... you should study up alot of this mushroom, its not only fun but worth your while... go through the files on the main shroomery site, and find some articles on this, read up. this is an amazing mushroom and i think everyone should be well educated on it.

ya i really want to know so much because ive heard of good experiences and bad experiences and heard it all depends on the way its prepared and if i get a musc i gotta prepare it and try it but i want to gather everything about it first

There are mainly two mushrooms that I have seen confused with the red capped varieties of Amanita muscaria. The red capped species of Russula (some people think the red cap is good enough for identification) have showed up here a couple times, and Amanita parcivolvata has also showed up. As far as I know the toxins in A. parcivolvata are still unknown, so it should be avoided. Do *not* use the stem color as your only distinguishing characteristic - mushroom colors are notorious for fading.

As far as the Amanita muscaria experience being pleasant, I have spoken with lots of people over the years who have tried them, and only heard about 2 claim they enjoyed it. The vast majority of people say they'd never do it again. If you're set on eating some, limit your intake the first time. The levels of the toxins are very variable, and the serious poisonings result from large doses. Also, contrary to popular belief, there is not antidote for these toxins, so if you eat too much you're just going to have to ride it out.
