Used cakes and casings.

Question, I have a large compost pile which would make for an excellent substrate, however it is winter now (PA.). Is it a good idea to toss the used up casings and cakes on the compost pile now and see what happens or is this just a waste of time? Just not sure what the freezing temps would do to the mycelium. There doesn't seem to be a viable way to save all that stuff until the weather breaks.

Sure. Put them in the heap. It can't hurt anything, and has a chance of making one happy Mike next year.

You may want to create a smaller compost pile to put your cakes/casing into. Make a pile about 2-3 foot high and around, and bury your cakes/casings inside the new pile. The heat in a large compost pile(even in winter) can be enough to kill your mycellium.
Plus, if you intend to use any of the compost from your large pile this winter, you won't have to try and avoid anything you've added to it.
