questions with pics.......

So this is definitely contaminated.
My question is, has anyone ever had mycellium grow with a brown "edge" to it? I'd like to post a pic, but none are coming out worthwhile to post. Basically, the mycellium is growing on the cakes, and at the edge of the myc is brown. This dissappears as it keeps growing, but i was wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen.
Also, contams stay on the cake, correct? Like if i kept my jars in an incubator for 3 weeks without checking them, a contam couldn't sneak in and grow then be covered by the myc, right? Like once a contam is there, you'll know it's there, right?
Also, according to the shroomery Bacilius affects grain. Does it also affect BRF substrate?
Has anyone ever had the growth start in wierd spots? Like i tried to inoc on the side of the glass, in between the substrate and the jar, but in most of the jars, most of the growth is occuring where the protective verm layer meets the substrate, or on top of the substrate. This has only happened to 2 jars, one of which being the contaminated one above. The other is one that i thought was going to have to be chucked too.
Finally, thinking ahead......besides the BRF/verm substrate mixture, what mixes have people come up with for the pf jars that work well?

Good call on the infection id. I am pretty sure that is what it is.I know what you are talking about. The brown edge right next to the area where it stops. It thickens up. The mycel is fighting the infection but cant colonize that area. You can take the cake out and clean it and cut off that area about 1/4th inch from the infection. It should colonize the cut area. The cake has a good chance of still being good but not good for a casing

yeah with the brown edge around is probably WETSPOT. But more common on whole grain. Take a look in the contam forum!

i had a bronw lining around most of my myc. today and i decided to take the cake out and crumble it to look around just to see most of the inside was contaminated with some dark brown mold, yours might not be as bad if it goes away. mine was there for about a week until i decided to open it. Good luck

the brown sounds like either: A)Wetspot or B)Your jars had too much BRF, and it got gooey on the bottom. The myc is trying to colonize it and it takes a while.
I've seen a jar take over a small infection of mold before... so yes, contaminates can disappear... but if they had toxins in them, there's a possibility they're still in the mycelium.

the brown edge is part of the myc. It looks like a strand of brown string, and moves with the myc as it colonizes the jar.

your original question has been answered

Once contamed..its done and you need to toss it. Myc can be discolored either slightly brown or yellow..if it fully colonizes and smells like mushrooms and not sour then its ok...otherwise..stick it in the trash...if the brown looks slimey or wet at all, its quite probably bad as well.
