Computer Game Violence
    #3539522 - 12/24/04 01:49 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

Has anyone noticed how  games nowerdays are getting increasingly more violent, remember the good old games for the Nintendo like Mario, tetris, Snake rattle & roll. Or MasterSystem games like Sonic the hedgehog. Back in the day, i think games were far trippier and fun, does anyone remember Dizzy, what a fantastic game, god those excellent Atari St games. I tend not to play violent games anymore, they seem to affect my state of mind and make my quite agressive, maybe im just a bit weak minded  . Anyways just an observation.

They are becoming more violent, but that's because they are becoming more realistic.

Reality is violent.

Yes i agree the world is becomming a more violent place, but do we really need to poison our minds with it interactvily.

well thats the individuals choice, but i for one dont agree or support violence in any shape or form, and poisoning, conditioning and desensitizing our youth to this violence in my opinion is not a good thing.

Yeah i hear you, im not saying that if you play violent games that your gonna turn into a violent person, its a more subtle kind of conditioning. its like if i see a picture of a person mutilated, bleeding, guts everywhere, i usually feel utterly disgusted, sickened, angry, or sad. But ive met people who watch violent movies, and play violent games all the time, and when i ask what they feel they usually either say "nothing much" or laugh and say something like "shit, sick, man thats cool!".

So from my observation, this kind of desensitization is happeining all the time, it makes people dissaociate from others suffering, which again in my opinion is not good! but it works for the goverment i guess!

I think I understand what point your getting at, and I agree.
I feel conditioned. It's not hard for me to watch some pretty horrible things and not really feel too affected by it. Now, I don't think violence is cool and I have never once been in a physical fight in all my life, but I do enjoy some video games people would deem violent.

Subtle conditioning, I like how you put that. Then again, I watched a ton of ER back in the day, and then theres always the news, so I'm pretty much unaffected by much anymore.

I think that anyone who can't understand the difference between "video game" and "real life" has NO business playing video games (or doing much else, for that matter).

People like competition, and first-person shooters are generally the best way to directly compete with other gamers. I certainly wouldn't say ALL video games are becoming more "violent"...the violence was always there. It's just that now we've become MUCH better at making the violence semi-realistic. FPS games also tend to have the most cutting-edge graphics and physics engines, so they contrinue to be the most popular games.

I'd say I get more conditioning out of the media and movies than video games though. Because true, a video game is a video game and reality is a reality. The News actually shows reality (Well, when it isnt being censored by some organization)

Im not sure how many truly disturbed people there are in the world who cannot tell the difference between a computer game and real life. Im just happy i havent met any

yes i agree computer game violence has been there since the begining, but i think its certainly more commonplace now. Computer graphics has made these games much more realistic and bloody, which in my opinion strgnthens the conditioning and desensitization factor. I feel these games a pretty nasty and generally promote negative states of mind. I too don't think all computer games are getting violent, some are great educational tools, fun, visually stunning, thought provoking and generally excellent, intelligent peices of software. FPS games unfortunatly are extremly popular, and have the best graphics, which make them more desirable. Is this a healthy form of competition? Are the youth of today being brainwashed? i dont know.

You know, it's funny you mention that, because I've thought about that before. Now, I don't care if people want to play video games. People can do their own thing, I don't mind. I have nothing at all against video games, I play them occasionaly.

But, if you dont think video games brainwash youth, the Army sure does. They spent some decent money in producing that free first person shooter they have. It's pretty realistic and it basically makes you start to think like a soldier.

The problem I have with the subject of "video game violence desensitization" is that you NEVER actually find someone who is "desensitized" in this manner. Never.

Instead you get a LOT of people who play the games themselves saying something to the effect of "well I can see that this violence will brainwash kids who play these games...except for me, of course".

Everyone seems to assume that everyone else is being brainwashed...but never themselves!

Yes movies have been getting more violent as well, this has to be a major contributing factor as well. Desensitization for the masses. Show them violence, gore, horror to condition, desenisitze, dull and control the population. Seems logical from a military, or political point of view. Not that im a big conspiricy theorist or anything. :whoa: :pimpin:

As Micheal Moore pointed out in Bowling For Columbine, the violent movies and video games that some over here in North America want to blame our violence problems on are seen/played ALL OVER THE WORLD. Why doesn't Japan have this kind of violence problem? Their children play the same violent games that we do, and they also get to watch all that manga porn

I stand corrected

Personally, I don't see much of a problem with "desensitization". I'd rather not puke and pass out if I ever have to be near Death or some kind of hard violence

I don't think desensitization is the problem here, that's all. It probably has more to do with parents letting the TV raise their kids...without actually teaching them things like WHY killing is wrong.

Yeah man, to true to true, i agree 100% . But on a personal not from the point of view of my spiritual practice i need to feel all feelings associated with death and suffering fully and unconditionally to develop compassion. But the puking i can do without :puke:

Network news is far more guilty in this area than video games IMO. It appeals to the morbid fascination of viewers and caters to it. Listen to NPR news and actually find out what is happening in the world instead of car/train/airplane crash/beheading #143,645.

I always watch the news with a questioning mind, is this true? half truth? complete shite, then i usually come to the conclusion that the only thing i can trust are the facts. If a person was murdered, then i know for sure somebody is dead, everything else is questionable.

After giving some thought to this thread, i have concluded in my mind that games are more desenstizing than television for the simple reason of user interaction. for example if somebody sees an image of a real dead body on the television, this is real life and exposure to such grusome facts are likely to spure feelings common to humanity when shown the grim face of death, however with interactive violence the user activley in his mind is taking pleasure in seeking out the enemy (FPS games) and killing them thus subtly suggesting to the user that violence is an acceptable aspect of humanity. Instead of becomming adverse to real life violence and reacting with normal human responses, he passivly accepts the reality of the situation thus preventing the indivual from feeling adverse and acting on those feelings of adversity. What do you think?
