Newbie Question

Hello. A friend is growing for the first time. Using PK spores, and following the MMGG v3.2 tek, with the Poor Man's Terrarium (a 2 liter bottle). Things have been going very well. Colonization went well (tho was a bit slow), pinning was good, entered the growing phase. Two nice size shrooms came to maturity (veil just pulling away from stalk). Checked on them this morning, everything looked great and healthy. Was planning on harvesting the 2 developed shrooms this evening. But, about 6 hours after he saw his healthy cake this morning, he came back to find that large sections of the cake turned a blue-grey color. Many of the smallest shroom formations were suddenly blue-grey and gnarly. Much of the mycelium took on a blue-grey cast. The two developed shrooms seemed unaffected. Can anyone help diagnose what went wrong? Should he throw it all out and start over? Are the 2 shrooms he harvested ok (there was no blue-grey color to them at all)? What should he watch for next time? Are there better teks for a beginner? Thanks, Resonance

Don't know for sure, but sounds like some kind of bacteria to me. You might want to go to the contamination board and look around there for an answer. I would ditch it, though.

OR maybe it just bluing of the mycelium - depends how much there is - what does it look like to you?

Did the cake get bruised during or before you harvested? Did the cake dry any? If you know the color blue of bruising you can recognize normal bluing of cakes..... If you have ANY doubts dont ingest.... Peace

> OR maybe it just bluing of the mycelium Yes. Did the humidity suddenly drop? And the small bluish mushrooms are aborts. Pick them and dry them, they are good to eat(some say even stronger than "normal" mushrooms)

If the blue is from bruising, will the blue fade back to the normal color eventually? Or is bruising permanent? I don't think there was any sudden drop in humidiity. Thanks, Resonance

>will the blue fade back to the normal color eventually Yes, if the humidity is high enough, the mycelium will regrow.

So, if the mycelium goes back to while, I'll conclude it was just bruising. If not, I will assume contamination. Thanks, resonance

Most contaminants that you will run into can be detected thru smelling. Smell your casing. I'm sure it's just bruising, but if it smells a little funny then your probably dealing w/ contaminants.
