Split Cap (USA is sleeping) :(
    #3538208 - 12/24/04 06:34 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Hello, I did a search on the subject of my question but got opposite "answers".

Yesterday I transferred my cake to a bigger terrarium cause Im expecting more cakes to be birthed soon.

The PMP I build is 1,5 feet high, and 1,5 feet broad. I filled it with 3 inch geolite and 2,5 inch water.

An airpump should take care of fanning. It has two exits so I put 2 airstones in teh pmp, of each about 6 inch long.

Now the caps are splitting after veils broke.

Soem say its too dry, some say too humid, and another one says its by too much "wind" so too much fanning.

What do the experts think? Its the cakes second flush, first flush in other terrarium with geolite, water and airpump no problems.

I have the feeling its the airpump "blowing" too hard through the geolite.

What do the veterans think?

Too bad america is a sleep now..

EDit: humidity must be high, the meter says >99%. How reliable that sucker is I dont know. Waterdrops are all over the sides and lid of the pmp.
The cakes are positioned just above the airstones.
The stems also look dry/"shrinkeled" (? rimpeld? )

Split caps on the top = dry.

Example

These big honkers were on casing taken out of grow chamber, someting came up, they were set aside & I could not get back for a few hours. In that short time - all the caps SPLIT like that.

yeah lack of humidity

if your cakes are directly on the airpumps that's your main bet.

Like agar said, too dry. You need less water for that much geolite. The point is for the geolite to wick the water to suface area exposed to the air. By putting in too much water you're actually decreasing humidity.

Thanks helpers!

Can it also be caused by teh airpump pumping too much air through?

edit: As you can see its not split on the top, does that make it another story? I really think its quit humid, but will decrease the waterlevel anyway!

Another thing comes to my mind, can too high humidity dry the shrooms out? I think of that vause when I have been in the bath too long my fingers are "shrinkeled"(?), When I was a kid we called it old wifes hands...

it's usually low humidity that causes scaling (splitting of the cap.)

what strain are they? the seem to be splitting as they flatten out, which is a characteristic of some strains.

yeah, PF doesn't usually do that.

i'd say low humidity. the air pump is pumping in low humidity air, so that is most likely the cause.

Hmmz makes sense, but how is a PMP ever gonna work then?

Someone (tantalus) says that the water level is too high, I might try that, lower the H@O level.

your water level should be an inch below the top of your geolite/perlite/lava rock.

is it pumping under the water using bubble wands?

The PMP says 3/4, if geolite layer is 4 inch then an inch under gealite is correct.
I think geolite layer is about 3 inch in my PMP, and the water is very close to the geolite surface thats true. Maybe half an inch under it.

At bottom of tub, so UNDER the geolite, there are 2 airstones (each measuring 6-7 inch in lenght)

ok, sounds good to me.

wow, how well does your lid seal? how often are you pumping in air?

Airpump is on all the time, Lid seals well but not 100% air tight I presume, since the tub did not x plode yet... ;p
The holes for the airhoses are fitting exactly, tub is transparant everywhere.

I could ad an inch of geolite then the water really is at 3/4 of the geolite highth...

But I dont understand what tantalus says, that the high water level is bad for humidity.
In the tub where it fruited its first flush it was about the same, water close to geolite level.

Biggest differences are:
* volume of this tub is much larger
* 2 airstones constantly running (and had them at full power)
* Tub1 had 1 airstone at lowest power (also 24*7 though)
* slightly relative lower waterlevel at tub1 (now its like 4/5 in tub 1 it might have been 3/4)

That cap looks very moist. It could simply be the strain. Some strains are more prone to splitting (especially on the edges). Puerto Ricans come to mind. That just doesn't look dry at all.

Just my opinion.

Thanks alkaloids, I dont think it is low RH in my PMP either, the walls and the lid are covered with millions of drops, the RH-Meter says "-,-" meaning over 98%.
The other caps who broke their veils did not split. Only thing I changed was put the airpump at a lower rate.

As I wonderd when I am in teh bath lond enough and I come out my hands look shrinkeld/rimpeld, I am thinking maybe very high humidity can also cause the splitting of the caps?

BTW it is not the strain, it is PF classic and teh first flush (same cake) no splits were reported by the foaf of the cat of the guy next door..

Sometimes it just happens. Maybe it was just how it formed and when the veil was breaking it split the cap a little? Either way caps splitting doesn't harm anything and if your whole flush isn't doing it don't worry about it.

Thanx shrooms, maybe so, BUT
1. I am curious
2. Next flush will be in this PMP from the start! (this cake just moved bout 20 hours ago at that time no veil breaking)

Ok now so you guys know two things can cause splitting #1 low RH and #2 extremely fast growth. Yours actually look saturated possibly from directly misting them or a very high humidity so it's hard for me to say. Either way GL

Yeah did not mist directly but there were falling drops on the caps in former chamber.
Also the lights were on about 18 hours a day.

Thanks Hyphae and everybody, I harvested teh shrooms, and will see how nexr grow goes!
